It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Barry Lynn Johnson. Barry passed away peacefully at The Cascade Hospice on May 15, 2023, at the age of 74 after a short and courageous battle with cancer.
Barry was born on January 24th, 1949, to Lydia and Harvey Johnson in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. After graduating from Weyburn Collegiate in 1967, Barry went on to apprentice in the funeral profession at Cleland Funeral Home in Weyburn. Following his apprenticeship, Barry became the Funeral Director at Winter’s Funeral Home in Hanna, Alberta. Barry had an illustrious 36-year career in the Funeral industry, having spent his last 25 working years at Henderson’s Funeral Home in Chilliwack.
In 1970, through mutual friends, Barry met the love of his life, Gerri Annas. After a yearlong engagement, stipulated by Gerri’s father to the date, the two solidified their vows in 1971. Barry and Gerri were blessed with three beautiful children: Heather, Michael, and Kyla.
After retiring from Henderson’s in 2005, Barry was not ready to leave the workforce completely. By combining his passions for gardening and horticulture, Barry started his own lucrative lawn care business. His customers were always pleased by his services and friendly demeanour. Barry could be seen driving around town in his white truck and trailer, always full of life, friendly and talkative. However busy Barry got, he was sure not to never miss his daily coffee breaks with his friends at Tim Horton’s and McDonalds.
Those who were fortunate enough to know Barry, knew he was the most loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, colleague and friend. He touched the lives of so many people. He will truly be missed and will never, ever, be forgotten.
Barry is predeceased by his parents and his younger sister Lynda. He is survived by his loving wife Gerri of 51 years and his children Heather, Michael (Samantha), Kyla (Jeff) and his grandchildren Chelsea, Bryce, Blythe and Blake. He is also survived by his two brothers Earl (Bev) and Graham (Sheila), brother-in-law Allan and sister-in-law Shelley (Doug). There are several nieces, nephews and extended family members that will miss him dearly. He loved fiercely and deeply, and we take comfort in knowing that Barry is now at peace.
We would especially like to thank the Chilliwack Community Home Health and Chilliwack Hospice Society for all their support in caring for Barry and our family during this time.
A Celebration of Life for Barry will be held Monday, May 29, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Henderson's Funeral Homes & Crematorium, 45901 Victoria Ave, Chilliwack, BC V2P2S9. Following the Celebration of Life will be a Graveside Service from 2:00 PM at Vedder View Cemetery, 44675 Watson Road, Chilliwack, BC V2R2Y6.
