Son of Alberta and John Vanderlinde of Lee’s Summit, Missouri and brother to Alice Deutsch (nee Vanderlinde) of Choctaw, Oklahoma. Dr. Vanderlinde, “Bill”, is survived by his two daughters, Cynthia and Pamela, two grandchildren, Max and Ella, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bill emigrated to the US from the Netherlands after World War Two and settled in the Kansas City area. He exceled in school and attended the University of Missouri on a football scholarship. During his senior year, the team played in the Orange Bowl, an experience he loved to recount for his friends and family. Bill continued at the University of Missouri and earned his PhD in organic chemistry. He spent his career in research and rose to the ranks of senior scientist at Monsanto in St. Louis. In his spare time, he loved playing golf, gardening and barbequing. His family has yet to duplicate his famed bbq ribs. Bill spent his later years in Naples, Florida and had recently purchased a condo at the Lake of the Ozarks to spend summers up North. Up until a few months before his death, Bill was playing golf and enjoying time with his family in Chicago.
A Lutheran service will be held at 11am on Saturday, June 2nd at Grace Lutheran Church in River Forest, Illinois followed by a reception nearby. A celebration of his life will be scheduled in the fall of 2018 in St. Louis. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that bequests be sent to Bethesda Home and Rehab in Chicago.
