It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the passing of RETIRED POLICE DETECTIVE WILLIAM E. GRIFFIN, on 28 March 2015. Bill was born on 17 April 1925, the son of a Chicago Police Officer John Griffin and mother (Grace). Bill graduated St. Itas Grade School and Senn High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 and served aboard the destroyer escort USS Hubbard which sunk a German Submarine. He was discharged in 1946. Bill followed in his father’s footsteps and began his career with the CPD in 1951. During his career Bill served in Districts, the Auto Inquiry Desk, and 22 years in the Intelligence Section. He was promoted to detective in 1968. His last assignment was with the Intelligence Section. Bill was a third generation Chicago Police Officer dating back to his Grandfather (Charles) in 1888.
Bill Griffin retired in 1985 after 34 years of service. He then moved to Ocala, Florida and lived in the Rolling Greens Community where he had many good friends and happy times.
Loving father of James (Cyndy), Ret. CPD; Cherished grandfather of Jennifer (Mark) Schane, James (Angela) Griffin, and Kimberly (Scott) Kendall; Caring great-grandfather of Jacqleen, Daniel, Jessica, Aiden, Connor, Colin, Grace, Riley, Mary, Brady, Samantha, and Cooper. William was preceded in death by his loving wife of 41 years, Reba, and his brother, Jack, Ret. CPD.
The visitation will be held at Malec and Sons Funeral home at 6000 N. Milwaukee, Chicago, on April 6th, 2015 from 4-9 PM. Funeral mass to follow on April 7th, 2015 at 11:30 AM at Immaculate Conception Chruch, 7211 W.Talcott Ave., Chicago. Interment Maryhill Catholic Cemetery.
