Simon was born in London, England, on September 24, 1960. He and his family relocated to Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood in 1965. He attended the University of Chicago Lab Schools through high school, where he distinguished himself as an exceptional soccer player, serving as captain of both the U-High and Hyde Park teams. Simon held the U-High goal-scoring record for many years and led his team to impressive finishes in the state tournament.
Simon was a passionate Boy Scout leader and gave many years of service to the troops in both Evanston and Hyde Park. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, an Advanced Certification in Computer Science from DePaul University, and a Master’s Degree in Information Technology from Northwestern University. He managed software and hardware implementation at First National Bank of Chicago and then credit security for Discover Financial Services.
In 2014, Simon was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s disease, but it never held him back from his life. He was a compassionate, intelligent, and active individual with a dry and witty sense of humor. He traveled to many parts of the world both as a child and an adult. Simon was a very devoted father to his three beloved children, coaching them in soccer, organizing endless birthday and holiday celebrations, taking them on camping trips and teaching them strength of character. Of all his varied activities, his favorite moments were those spent at home, watching movies with his kids.
His last few weeks were spent doing what he loved; relaxing, traveling to his childhood summer home, and enjoying time with his family. Although his absence can never be filled, and his loss is felt immensely, he will forever be deeply loved and fondly remembered by his family and friends.
He is survived by his three children; Jeremy, Tzivia and Alana; his former wife Rachael; his mother Marda; and his brothers Michael and Julian.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research would be deeply appreciated.
