Bob was the best listener a friend could ever hope for.  And a great person with whom to discuss just about anything, from the political to the practical to the personal.  

My deepest sympathies, on this first anniversary of Bob's passing, to Diana, Jeff, and Dan, and as well to Bob's other family members and friends.  



I am so sad to know that Dr. Bob Shuter passed away. He was my advisor when I studied at Marquette in late 90s and since then, he and I met in Seoul, Chicago and CA and regularly I spoke at his class via skype as I live in Seoul. He was a teacher and a friend with warm heart and I enjoyed interacting with him. I pray for him and his family members. with good memory... Hoh

My favorite memory is the many foodie adventures. Also the many life lessons share in good experiences and challenging ones. May those memories life on

Heartfelt Condolensces To The Family Of Rob Shuter  To  Wife Diane Shuter And Sons Jeff And Danny Shuter On The Loss Of A Great Brother In Law , Friend And Wonderful Individual As Well . Sister In Law Debbie ( Diane 's Younger Sister ) And Myself Rick Godawa ( Debbie's Husband ) Have Many Fond Memories Of Rob Down Through The Years And In Many Ways He Was Almost Like An Older  Brother And Great Friend  And Not Just A Brother In Law To Both Of Us  . He Would Always Make Time To Talk To You  And Always Made You  Feel Like An Important Part Of The Family . Rob Was Articulate And Always Had And Shown A lot Of Class And We Will Both Miss Him Dearly !

OMG, it breaks my heart that Bob has passed.  I worked with him in the Intercultural Division of the NCA.  He was the best.  His imagination, energy, and loyalty were hallmarks of this wonderful person. 

Baby blue, Bambi brown? Dr. Shuter's instructional methods were some of the most effective and memorable. As students, we adore him, quoted him, and still think back on him fondly to this day. I think he was my teacher in both interpersonal and intercultural communication. His simulations regarding prejudice and bias, his role-play activities, and his co-cultural panels were so supremely effective. As an assistant professor now in communication, I know the Dr. Shuter's classes were a reason I decided to enter the academy.  I am so sorry to hear of his passing, but hope his family will find comfort in the memories and blessings he brought to bear on many lives like mine. 

Uncle Robert, you were one of the best Uncles anyone could have ever asked for.   You always took great care of Nicole, Liz, and I.   I have so many great memories with you and life will not be the same without you.  You taught me the importance of knowledge and education and that working out my brain is just as important if not more so than working out physically.  You always had a desire to learn more and learn something new everyday.  You made me understand why knowledge truly is power.  You could be reading the paper and then join Dan and I in the living room to watch the Bucks game and talk about sports.   You were funny, you were smart, and you just had a way with words.  You always knew the right thing to say.  I remember your love of Jazz and it doesn't seem like that long ago that we were at the Jazz fest at Millennium Park in the summertime.  I remember so much about the house in Fox Point too.  I remember you taking me to Kopps for frozen custard, I remember going to a Brewers game with you and Dan, I remember the boat, and so much more.  On top of being a great husband, you were a great father and you blessed me with Dan and Jeff.  Dan has become more of an older brother to me than a cousin.  You will be missed greatly and what I learned from you will last the entirety of my lifetime.  I love you Uncle Robert.  

I met Bob in the mid 2000's and we soon became good friends sharing many meals, bike rides, and spirited conversations on a wide variety of topics. I quickly felt like he was a friend from my childhood. I will miss him, his vitality, and passion about so many topics. We were both avid readers of the New York Times and our conversations often centered on things we had read there. It is now so hard to read the paper and not be able to discuss an article or topic with Bob. Friendship with Bob was both very emotionally and intellectually gratifying. It is a hole in my life that cannot be filled but does provide a warm glow of memories.

Bob and I began to meet regularly at annual conferences of the National Communication Association. We had either coffee or a meal at about every conference for the last several years, and I preceded Bob as the chair of the International and Intercultural Communication Division. Bob treated me like a mentee--as I started my career later than he did. We talked about culture, ideas for books (though often these were just ideas) and current interests.  In my classes, I often teach about several of Bob's articles and interest areas--his early work on nonverbal communication that challenged the blanket classifications of cultures into E.T. Hall's notions of "high" and "low" contact cultures; his essays on the importance of the "centrality of culture" and studying under-studied regions of the world; his "relativist" essay on communicative ethics from different world religion standpoints; and, most recently his focus on the role of new media formats in the changing and preservation of culture and intercultural communication. Bob was a giant in the discipline, a great man, and a great colleague. I will miss him. 

It's really difficult to write about Bob in the past tense. He was so vivid and intensely alive, I cannot believe he's gone.  Bob meant a great deal to me - he hired me at Marquette and working there with him for 30 years was a delight. I have so many great memories of the times we spent together. Bob and I wrote together and published a couple of articles that merged our research interests. It was a joy to work with him. Talking over our ideas and laughing together shapes my memories of him. Bob introduced me to many people in Milwaukee and became so much more than a valued colleague. His loss leaves a huge void in the world. Much love to Diana, Jeff, and Dan.

I met Rob at a basketball game at Nicolet High School watching our young sons running up and down the court. We started chatting and soon became fast friends. As time progressed my wife Sue and Diana became dear friends and we spent many wonderful outings for dinner, boating and theater in Milwaukee. As our friendship network expanded another professor and wife joined our small circle. Our wives referred to Rob, Jose and myself as The Three Amigos. So many of our conversations focused on family, matters of academia and his favorite newspaper the NY Times. Rob’s sense of humor and engaging conversation were something that my wife and I relished. We dearly miss his presence in our lives. We miss and love you Rob.

In the 50 years I knew Bob, I think I was most impressed by his unwavering commitment to dialogue and debate. Forever the teacher and the student, he relished the opportunity to share ideas. He was always interested in hearing the thoughts of others whom he treated with respect and dignity. And, of course, he was witty, engaging, and fun to be around. He made a difference, and he will be missed.

I met Bob in the mid-70s.  We were early in our careers, his, as a professor, author, and consultant; mine, as an editor and publisher.   
Sometimes a year or more would pass between the academic conventions at which Bob and I would see each other.  His greetings stick in my mind—the friendly smiles of recognition, the unfailing warmth, his immediate interest in my life and work.  
We would sit and talk for hours about our families, politics, academia and textbook publishing.  Bob was a talker but also a doer.  He was forever embarking on new projects—and just as forever, following through.  Shortly before getting sick Bob mentioned retiring from teaching.  Bob retire?  I would believe it only when I saw it.     
Family was very important to Bob.  Nothing meant more to him than Diana, Jeff, and Dans’ happiness.  He also spoke often and fondly of his extended family, in-laws, and friends.     
Over time, Bob and I began, between visits, to catch up by phone.  Though I can be a moaner and groaner, Bob always listened patiently to me.  His friendship during some difficult times made them a little less difficult, for which I will always feel grateful to him.       
For the past two-and-one-half years, Bob battled a terrible disease.  His determination to walk again was inspiring—as was, more generally, his fighting spirit.  In one memorable incident, Bob’s radiologist remarked that Bob, in his compromised condition, could not handle any more treatment.  Bob, supposedly unconscious, stirred to life.  His head popped up from the gurney.  “Keep going,” he said.  
Last fall, just prior to the start of Bob’s final decline, he would sometimes call me, late in the evening, from his bedroom.  His speech by this point was slurred and could be difficult to understand.  Still, reflecting on those calls brings to mind E.M. Forster's "Only connect."  Human connection was central to Forster's work--much as it was so very central to Bob's life. 
Goodbye, Old Friend, I will miss you.  

Uncle Rob, you will forever be loved and dearly missed by all.  The impact and inspiration you had on all is truly one in a million. You touched the lives of many and your legacy will continue on. I will hold dearly to the memories of all of us at the house in Milwaukee, taking the boat out on the lake , jazz festivals in Chicago , trips to Phoenix and Miami , and conversations over dinner. It was a such blessing to have you as an Uncle , the wisdom and knowledge you shared will always be cherished . Life will not be the same but you will forever be in our hearts and minds. 

Remembering so many holiday celebrations with Rob and Diana with  their entire Miami family. Jeff, Dan, Scott, Tracy, Andrew and Kate.... with all the parents and, of course, Grandpa Lou who made us all laugh. I loved our university talks! Joyce loved her brother to the moon and back.  Always in our memories!

I had the pleasure and privilege of knowing Rob. What a wonderful, interesting,  delightful and knowledgeable friend he was who was so devoted to his family and gave so much to his prof
ession as well. My greatest memories of Rob were talking about jazz: both jazz of the past and jazz created by new artists. He was most engaging in his conversations and genuinely interested in what his friends would share with him.  He was funny and witty and such a joy to be around! My deepest condolences to dear Diana, Dan and Jeff. Rob was one in a million and he'll never be forgotten by any of us whose paths he crossed. Rest in peace now Rob and join up with those great jazz musicians in the beyond. And God especially bless and comfort his family. 

My brother in law Rob will be dearly missed.  I remember the many spirited conversations we had about politics and of course basketball, Bulls vs. Bucks for sure.  He was always interested in hearing about what was going on in my life and others.  Rest in piece brother.

I was at Northwestern University with Bob as graduate students several decades ago.  I would see Bob each year at the National Communication Association (NCA) convention.  Bob was at home at the scholarly meeting--listening, sharing, and talking.  His energy was remarkable.  May his memory be a blessing!

I have known and been good friends with Bob since we were both 14 years old.
In fact we found out that we were both born 
on EXACTLY the same year, month,and day 
while riding on a CTA bus to Riverview amusement park.
Bob was a  very good athlete,scholar and even better friend. 
He was a vibrant irrepressible LIFE force who loved nothing better then to vigorously engage in spirited debate about politics, sports or his beloved Jazz.He was so Vibrantly ALIVE, that
his death  seems almost inconceivable.
His passing leaves a great void in all who knew him.




I'm so sorry to learn of the passing of "Bob"!! I've known him since he moved to Chicago from Queens, NY which was in 1958! We shared many childhood and adult  memories. A few things such as Balmoral Beach and partnering a lawn service when we were college students are a few of many experiences we shared together! We (always friendly) debated sports, girls and politics but we always knew  we would remain friends forever! Bob was always very fond of life and enjoyed life to the fullest. Bob had an adoring wife (Diana) and family.  As I'm writing this tribute, tears are welling up in my eyes! May you rest in peace and may G-d shine upon you!

Dr.Robert Shuter was an enthusiastic mentor for so many of his former students at Marquette University. He had a positive impact on their lives. I was fortunate enough to be not only a former student and mentee, but lifelong friend. My heartfelt condolences to his loving wife Diana and  his 2 sons. Know that he has left a wonderful legacy to so many and will never be forgotten.

I am so saddened to hear of the loss of Bob Shuter. He was such a part of the fabric of the College of Communication at Marquette. Our prayers are with family and friends in this difficult time.


I am profoundly shaken and so sad to learn of Bob’s passing. I am thinking of Diana and of all of his family. He meant a lot to me and I will always remember laughing and working with him. A huge loss.
