Survived by brother Dennis (Flora) Benker, and his sister-in-law’s Ann and Virginia and dear friend, business partner, Peter Nielsen and many special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Michael and Frances, sister Gloria, and his brothers Michael and Arthur.
Bob attended Northwestern University, was a United States Korean War Veteran, Chief of Civil Defense Fire for Chicago (volunteers that supported emergency duties), and he helped fight the 1958 Lady of Angels Fire. Bob co-founded, Able Fire and Safety, evolved into Paratech, Inc. the largest manufacturer of forcible entry tools, pneumatic air-lifting bags, and more; he also built P-10 crash trucks for the United States Air Force.
Bob was the first person in Chicago history to dye the Chicago River green, at the request of Mayor Richard J. Daley and Fire Commissioner Quinn.
Bob was known for his summer picnics in Camp Lake, Wisconsin (a.k.a. The Country). Bob welcomed family and friends to enjoy his homes in Wisconsin and Naples, FL. Bob was a dedicated son, taking care of his mother, Frances, until she passed away at 99 years old. Bob was an avid Cubs and Blackhawk fan and enjoyed telling fire and business stories. Bob always had a very strong faith; he was the unofficial “Mayor of Nazarethville” nursing home where he enjoyed living with his many friends.
