Peter M. Bator passed away on May 29, 2020 following a sudden illness. Born March 26, 1958 to Mary and Joseph Bator in Evergreen Park, IL, Peter was raised in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood by Mary and Aunt Johanne Saucuvenas alongside brother Jody and sister Mary Jo (Carlos) Bator-Oses. Peter discovered his passion for education at an early age. He attended De LaSalle High School, earned a B.A. in education from Illinois State University in 1980, and a Master’s Degree from University of Illinois at Chicago in 1988.
Peter met his wife Julia (nee. Read) through a softball league in 1983. They wed June 29, 1985. Peter and Julia raised two children, Mike and Emily, in Alsip, IL. Peter was, above all, a devoted and compassionate father. He always made time for his kids, who cherished him dearly. Peter was thrilled to welcome his new daughter-in-law, Carly, and soon to be son-in-law, Brett, into the family.
Peter was a special education teacher on Chicago’s south side for over 35 years. He spent the majority of his career at Julian High School and worked the past four years at Bouchet Math & Science Academy, where he joined a vibrant school community with a passionate staff and made fast friends. He devoted his professional life to serving children with special needs. Peter was eager to work every day.
Peter was an avid bowler, who managed “The Julian Rollers”, for many years. A Chicago sports fan through-and-through, he celebrated championship runs for all four major teams and relished the end of the Cubs pennant drought most of all. Peter was a BBQ expert and loved hosting parties where ribs were the star attraction.
Peter made an impact on everyone he knew. He was a kind, intelligent, and light-hearted man, who will be sorely missed. Donations can be made to the Children First Fund (childrenfirstfund.org) in his honor.
