Born April 6, 1974 to loving parents Linda and Patrick, Michael grew up on the south side of Chicago in Beverly and graduated from St. John Fisher. Michael then became part of the Caravan, attending Mt. Carmel High School where he spent the next four years wrestling and playing football. Michael spent the summers of his teenage years in North Freedom, Wisconsin, living with neighbors near the family’s farm, detasselling corn, and working on the Klemm’s dairy farm.
At 18, Michael earned his “bachelor’s degree” in “just one year” while playing rugby at Illinois State University. He then enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves where he trained at MCRD Marine Corps Recruiting Depot. He went to Marine schools 29 Palms and Camp Lejeune before shipping out to Albania and eventually achieving the rank of Corporal. After the Marines, Mike became a cement finisher with Local 502 where he constructed roads in the Chicagoland area as well as the city’s beautiful skyline.
In 1997 Michael met his loving wife Francesca. They married on April 24th, 1999 and bought a home in Chicago’s Oriole Park neighborhood where they’ve lived since. Mike and Fran’s proudest achievements were the birth of their three beautiful children, Michael (‘00), Marissa (‘03), and John (‘05). Mike loved coaching their sports teams and being a part of their activities through St. Eugene’s and Loyola. Especially during the last year, Mike spent a lot of time on walks with his four-legged friend Bailey. Mike cherished his free time up North, angling fish in Wisconsin and Canada. He also spent time down South relaxing on the beach in Florida. Above all else, Mike loved sharing time and making memories with friends and family.
In 2005, Mike received a call to fulfill his lifelong dream, following in his dad’s footsteps, and becoming a Chicago fireman. He was a part of the class of May 2nd 2005. Upon graduating from the fire academy, Mike was assigned to Truck 38, detailed to Squad 1, reassigned to Squad 2, assigned to Truck 26, and finally Tower Ladder 14 where he made the rank of Lieutenant. As a Lieutenant, he was assigned to 1st District Relief before returning to the 4th District and his beloved Battalion 18. Michael’s specialty certifications include high angle rescue, trench rescue, building collapse, hazmat tech, extrication specialist, deep tunnel rescue, swift water rescue, and rescue diver. During his career on the Chicago Fire Department, he was known as a passionate fireman with a heart of gold. Over the years and at every station, Michael made life-long brothers.
