Marc Meyer, urban adventurer, history reader, architecture admirer, and pithy bartender, passed away on December 19, 2018 after a long battle with cancer. Marc was born in 1962 in Lausanne, Switzerland to Camille and Marcella Meyer de Stadelhofen. Marc grew up in Yens, Switzerland and spent many summers with his parents and siblings, Franz and Anne, visiting his maternal grandmother and family in Denver, Colorado.
Marc loved to experience new places near and far and had a skill for finding the most intriguing undiscovered spot often right next door. He spent his 20s and 30s going to punk shows at CBGB’s, partying at Danceteria, visiting countless museums, playing (and winning) pub trivia and taking road trips across the United States. When he wasn’t doing the serious work of having fun, he worked as a dishwasher, prep cook, foot messenger, mailroom clerk, pension firm administrative assistant, and visa and passport expeditor.
Marc loved to travel; he visited 46 states, most countries in Europe, parts of Central and South America, Puerto Rico, Canada and Mexico. Some of his favorite places were Barcelona, Paris, Vienna, Mexico, New Orleans, Detroit and Pittsburgh. After Marc moved permanently to the U.S. he spent most of his time living in New York City, Pueblo, Colorado and Chicago but also lived in Denver; Athens, Georgia; and Salt Lake City. It was in Chicago on January 1, 2000 that he met his future wife, Susan who was instantly taken by Marc’s intelligence, wit and kindness. Marc was a devoted husband, supporting Susan in her many endeavors and was the best life partner she could have asked for. Marc and Susan soon moved to New York City for two years and then decided to quit their jobs and move to Pueblo, Colorado where their real adventure began.
Marc and Susan opened The Downtown Bar in September of 2006. Marc loved being a bartender and people loved coming to the bar and having conversations with Marc even voting him best bartender in Pueblo. In 2008, Susan, Marc and friends started an alternative free monthly, the Pueblo P.U.L.P. in which Marc wrote an acerbic column, “The Times You Live In.” During their time in Pueblo, Marc made the difficult transition from cat to dog enthusiast when he and Susan adopted their smart, curious, affectionate and loyal Sophie Dog, who passed away on May 31, 2018.
Marc and Susan eventually sold the bar and paper and moved back to Chicago. They continued to travel and explore new cities, museums and architecture, but Marc always thought of his time as a bartender and bar owner in Pueblo as the most meaningful adventure he ever had.
He is survived by his wife Susan Wolf, mother Marcella (Miller), brother Franz (Fatima), sister Anne, nieces and nephews, Leah, Zoe, Iyad, and Rami and mother and father-in-law Ron and Shirley Wolf. He is preceded in death by his father Camille. A memorial gathering will be held on Thursday, December 27 from 4-9 pm at Montclair-Lucania Funeral Home, 6901 W. Belmont, Chicago, IL with a memorial service at 8 pm. No flowers, please. Instead consider a donation to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Full obituary at dignitymemorial.com.
