Lai Chun Wong, a cherished resident of Chicago, Illinois, peacefully departed from this world on August 30th, 2023. She was born on September 5, 1948, in the vibrant city of Hong Kong, where her remarkable journey began. Lai's early years were marked by an era where young women often found themselves in the workforce, dedicating long hours to factories rather than the comfort of their homes. As the fourth child among seven siblings, Lai joined the ranks of young workers to contribute to her family's sustenance. Yet, she never uttered a word of complaint, fully comprehending the responsibilities that accompanied her role in a large, close-knit family.
Through various professional pursuits, Lai ultimately discovered her true calling within the dynamic world of the fashion industry, specializing in the thriving textiles sector, particularly sweaters. This path led her to acquire the skill of sewing, enabling her to create exquisite garments that seamlessly followed the ever-evolving fashion trends of Hong Kong. In this bustling city, she encountered her future husband, a skilled pressman, and soon embarked on a journey of matrimony, which blessed them with two loving children. They savored every moment of their lives while raising their family during the golden age of Hong Kong—a time when fashion, music, and entertainment reached their peak.
However, this golden era also exposed them to the shadowy presence of Hong Kong triads and corruption within government departments. Driven by their aspirations for a safer and brighter future for their children, Lai and her husband chose to immigrate to the United States. It was here that Lai rediscovered her passion for textiles, serving as an office manager at Tien Hu Knitting Company of California, a distinguished manufacturer of sweaters for renowned brands such as Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Lai reveled in the joys of life. She enjoyed retail therapy, treasured quality time with her daughter, and relished culinary adventures along with wine tastings with her son. Music brought her joy through singing with friends, and heartfelt phone conversations with her sister and cousins kept her close despite distances. She thrived on social interactions, engaged in lively games of ping pong, and doted on her beloved granddaughters. Lai's life was a colorful tapestry of vibrant experiences.
Lai leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience, survived by her devoted children, Janean (Kevin) Kwan, Adam Wong, and Goddaughter Karina Leung, as well as her five cherished grandchildren. She also leaves behind her beloved siblings, cousins, and an extensive circle of extended family and friends. Lai was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, Kang Kun Wong.
A visitation to celebrate Lai's life will be held on Saturday, September 9th, from 3 pm to 4 pm at Drake & Son Funeral Home, followed by a Funeral Service commencing at 4 pm.
