John B. McGowan, 83, of Chicago, IL, passed away on November 13, 2021. Cherished husband of 59 years of Patricia Rufo. Loving Father of Maureen McGowan Milner (Dave), Kevin McGowan (Tricia Cavers), Katie McGowan. Adoring Grandfather “Papa” of Ella & Grace Cantu & Ellie McGowan. Oldest of 8 siblings, dear Brother to Patricia, Jim (Anita), Timothy (deceased) (Jean), Bill (Mo), Cecilia, Eileen Nielsen, Jeanne Sheehan (Bob). Beloved Uncle Johnny to 11 cherished nieces and nephews.
John was a longtime resident of Lincoln Park, Chicago. He loved living in his urban neighborhood and biked the city streets frequently. He took a bike ride on the September day he had his stroke from which he didn’t recover.
He loved restaurants and dining, particularly breakfast spots around Chicago where he would hold court every Saturday morning with his family. He and his wife traveled through Europe extensively, visiting their favorite city, Paris, on many occasions.
Raised on the South Side, John was a fervent White Sox and Notre Dame football fan.
John’s Catholic faith was an important part of life. He was a parishioner at St. Josaphat church for several decades and developed many treasured friendships at the parish.
Visitation will be held on Friday, Nov. 19 from 3:00 – 9:00 pm at Drake & Son Funeral Home, 5303 N. Western Ave, Chicago. Funeral Mass to be celebrated at St. Josaphat Church, 2311 N. Southport, Chicago, on Saturday, November 20th at 11:00 am.
