James R. Hampe, Lieutenant/EMT Chicago Fire Department, 59. Loving father of Margaret, Marcus, Matthew, Melissa (Lance) DeRosa and Jessica Stoneburner. Proud grandfather of Christian, Joshua, Jaelyn and Jazzlyn. Fond son of the late Charles and Ruth. Dear brother of Bill (LuAnn), Gail (the late David), Ken (Linda), Carol (the late Henry) Hampe-Bailey. Fond uncle of many cousins, nieces and nephews. Former spouse of Elizabeth (nee Varela).
James was a hard worker & humble servant in all he did. James served the City of Chicago for more than 38 years as a Firefighter/EMT with the Chicago Fire Department reaching the rank of Lieutenant. His dedication could be seen in every aspect of his life from his family, the Chicago Fire Department family, and Our Saviour Lutheran Church family and his community.
James was a true family man and his commitment to family was unwavering. Being a father was one of his proudest accomplishments as well as being a foster parent. After being baptized at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, he attended Our Saviour Lutheran School 6th - 8th grade and Luther High School North. During his life, James was more than an active member at the church & school, donating his time as a handyman, chairman of the congregation and as an elder later becoming an ordained minister to help share his faith by preaching and spreading the word of God. James donated time to various charities and organizations, during his adult life including the American Red Cross, Salvation Army Canteen, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Fill the Boot, Lurie’s Children’s Hospital, Chicago Lighthouse, Our Saviour School for Fire Prevention Week, Chicago Park Districts as a coach, and with the Boy Scouts of America as a pack and troop leader. James loved to travel in his motorhome and enjoyed riding his motorcycle. He was waiting for a long overdue trip and retirement.
Visitation will be held Thursday, January 16th at Malec & Sons Funeral Home from 3:00pm – 8:00pm. Funeral service will be Friday, January 17th at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 3457 N. Neva Avenue, Chicago, with visitation from 9:00am until time of service 10:00am. Interment private.
