When I think of my Uncle Jack, I am still having a hard time dealing with him not being here.  Maybe that is why it has taken me so long to finally write.  

I've known Uncle Jack all my life and he has has always been part of my life, when my grandparents lived on Oakdale, I would spend weekends, summers, holidays, birthdays, celebrations and even distant family relatives would always gather there.  I remember all my uncles and aunts gathering esp. on Sundays to bond together.  

When I would stay overnite at my grandparents, one of my morning duties was to go and wake up my uncles.  And even though I had to sometimes actually shake them to wake them up, I remember Uncle Jack always smiling at me and saying "Good morning, how's my favorite niece?"  And from there, I would run back and forth between each of my uncles bedrooms, waking them up, and running into the kitchen to find out what's for breakfast or what was the family happenings for the day.

Being the only niece, I always got help with my homework, and if one uncle could not help me, another one would, my uncles were always there for me. They always wanted me to try and try and try again, and as I look back to our family and all my cousins, we were all blest with a family that believed in God and had strong family traditions.  

I remember when Uncle Jack told me he met a girl, and I asked him to tell me about her.  I could tell he was excited, he said she was pretty and she could cook.  I think his smile on the latter was bigger than the first part.  So, I met Jayne and she's been a great aunt since, I'm still learning cooking hints from her.

I was a little sad to hear that he was planning to get married, and move out of my grandparents place, but was overjoyed when I learned he was going to move upstairs and to my surprise, my new aunt even asked me to be in their wedding party.  

Uncle Jack was never too busy for anyone.  I remember him studying hard in school,drawing lots of lines on a tilted table and later on showing me pictures of buildings he had helped design.  Uncle Jack always enjoyed his work and had a sense of pride in his accomplishment.  We were all proud of him.  

When I was in college attending the Chicago Circle Campus and working downtown, Uncle Jack always invited me to visit his office and join him for lunch.  Even when it was a restaurant that had a sign "Gentlemen Only".  Uncle Jack told me just to follow him and I always did.  

Uncle Jack has passed and he is in Glory with our Heavenly Father and with my mom and dad, and others in our family and I know he'll be there when it's my turn.  

His memories will live on for generations and I will continue to share stories about my Uncle Jack.

Dear Jayne,
I thank our awesome God for allowing our paths to cross!!!  My life has been blessed by your lives.  I have such wonderful memories of Jack as we sat around the dinner table and he would start our meal with an energetic prayer of thanks to God.  I loved all the stories Jack told of family times, work, travels with friends, love for the Lord and so much more.  He lived life to the fullest and even to overflowing - as he shared his life with me and so many others.  I look forward to that reunion day in heaven when we will all meet in perfection - by God's gift of grace to those who procliam Him.  In the meantime, I know Jack is now a part of that "great cloud of witnesses" so I am all the more inspired to run with endurance the race of life set before me!!!

Guidance & Quality Time

I thank God for providing Uncle Jack to us and for Uncle Jack including my brother and I in his family.  The first thing that stands out in my mind was one one of our family ski trips in Steamboat, I ended up getting lost in the mountain.  I then somehow was able to run into him on the mountain.  Uncle Jack then guided me down the mountain.  He is a great guide.  The second thing that stands out to me was him taking me out to a Chinese Buffet.  This really meant a lot to me because ever since I was young, I was always afraid of Uncle Jack and when he took just me out to dinner, that really meant a whole lot to me and showed me he really did care about me.  Thank You Uncle Jack for everything you have done for me and for your LOVE.  I LOVE You.

Dear Auntie Jayne, Paul & Terry, Mike & Jeanne, Dan & Julia, Jon and Jeff,

I was so sorry to hear about Uncle Jack's passing.  Being overseas at the time of his funeral, I truly wished to have been there in person to pay my last respects.

Uncle Jack was always larger than life to me when I was younger.  As a kid I loved going over to your house.  His architecture really impressed me (your house on 1332 Peachtree Lane actually inspired a lot of designs in my own drawing time! =)

But, even more than how cool / fun it was at your house was how great it was to have your dad lead you guys in the way of Lord.  Whether he was dressing up as Santa for everyone during Christmas, navigating the way to Steamboat or saying a Thanksgiving prayer as the "patriarch" of your family, his legacy certainly lives on in each of you!

While the past 10 years were hard on him after his stroke, I always admired the perseverance and simple faith he demonstrated.  I'm sure things were very frustrating at times for him (and for all of you!) but his unwavering belief in the Lord was an on-going example for all of us over this past decade.  

While I am sad that he is gone from us, I am glad that he is now in heaven in a new and perfect body.  I think often of how he must be having wonderful conversations with Jesus, my dad and others and marvel at what a blessing it is to be a Christian =)

Uncle Jack was such a sweet man. I visited often while I was in school at Wheaton and he always had a smile on his face when I would walk in the door. He cared for and treated me like his own daughter. He was so caring, thoughtful and is missed greatly.

I'll always remember how he told me he wanted a flying cap with flying goggles with his Rx to wear in his wheelchair.

We remember you and Jane were mentors and friends to Doris and I.  We were lost when we first got to Chicago, a couple of New Jersey people wandering in the wilderness.  Your kindness and generosity made our stay in Chicago a tremendous time of growth in our walk with the Lord.  We are also indebted to you for the love you showed Lauren during her time at Wheaton! (Although I hope that you can forgive Lauren for leaving the front door open)  We thank God for your life here and look forward to seeing you again in heaven! There are many great attributes about my dad, and I could go on forever.  The two that come to mind are time and commitment.  Being an athlete, it was always reassuring to look up in the stands to see my dad in the crowd cheering and taking videos.  When I was at Taylor University, my dad would make the four hour drive to watch many of my Saturday games and then turn around and come back to campus on Monday to watch me play football.  After the game, it was always fun to go get something to eat and talk.  I don't remember what we talked about, but it was great to spend time with him.
Almost eleven years ago, my dad suffered his first stroke that left him paralized on his left side.  When Julia and I got married about a year and a half later, he was determined to walk down the aisle.  True to his word, he kept his commitment and made it down the aisle.  This reinforced his work ethic and dedication to stay strong for his family and his faith in Jesus Christ.  When you look at my family, Baby Jackson, Delaney, Janine, Julia, or me, I hope you see a glimpse of his legacy.  Dad, thank-you for all of your life lessons that you have taught me.  I am grateful for everything you provided.  I love you.  I will miss you, but like you always say - It is going to be a golden day.  Yes, it is truly a golden day because you are in Heaven.

Some things that we remember about Uncle jack are his jokes, humorous lines, expertise in many different areas, strong faith, and his generosity. I, Janice, still remember your old house, with the volleyball net set-up outside, and the basement to play in, and the atrium part of your living room, and the kitchen that was set-up to have cooking demonstrations!
Thank you for serving and caring for him so faithfully over the years. We admire your loving courage and strength to move him and help him in and out of the chairs and cars, without help. Thank you for the way you cared for him, engaging him in games, sightseeing, concerts and conversations. You purposely invited people over for a delicious meal or to watch ball games, so that Uncle Jack would have some others to talk to and spend time with. Even after working, you went home to serve him. Thank you for your humility and selflessness. You are a strong example to us!
Thank you for the many time that you cooked for our family. The kids enjoyed your cooking so much! Your homemade pizza, beef stew, salads, bread...we enjoyed it all. Oh, yes and we cannot forget the ice cream. Joshua in particular remembers eating ice cream and cookies with you and Uncle Jack. Thank you for your hospitality.
Sarah remebers that you introduced us to Blokus, Micah remebers your good food, and Hannah remembers the games that she played at your house - the jingo, Duplos, UNO, etc.Thank you for making fond memories for our kids at "910". They often wished that they could live there, rather than "203!" whkenever we passed your parking space, the kids would look to see if you were in or out. It was a comfort to them to know that you and Uncle Jack were there.
Now as you begin a different chapter in your life, may you feel the Father especially close to you, comforting you, giving you His rest and peace. May He give yoou strength for the days ahead, to be your strength and comparion. May you continue to serve and care for others as you have already been doing. You and Uncle Jack have positively influenced and encouraged so many people. Thank You!

What wonderful memories we have of Jack, Jayne and the Gin family......Green Lakes church family retreat, apple picking, learning golf together, skiing, Jack's special pizza dough recipe (the recipe still says "Jack's pizza dough"), and the many dinners together.  Jack's big grin was only surpassed by his generosity.  We're persuaded there is a heaven on earth and people like Jack are God's helpers to make this a heaven on earth for us.   

Though we haven't seen Jack for roughly 35 years, he's always been in our minds eye.  Jayne, thanks for showing us the DVD and catching us up on all that's happened.  We miss him already!

Uncle Jack and Mrs. Gin have been a great blessing to us since our marriage. They have been a great source of wisdom, with the wealth of life experience, 40+ years of marriage, and example of perseverance in the Christian  walk. Recently, Uncle Jack passed away, with many dear friends and family paying tribute to his investment in people's lives.
As we remember Uncle Jack's life, it is worth to invest our lives for eternity - God, His Word, and human souls that would only last forever.

I'm the youngest of the Jackson Gin clan. I want to tell you a little about myself, how my Uncle has taken me in as one of his own, and what he means to me.  So please pay attention.

If you've ever watched the Simpsons, you'll notice in the intro that Bart is writing a sentence on the school's blackboard over and over again.  Well, one of the sentences that I had to write went something like: if I want to graduate, I'll stop trying to knock the toupee off the principal's head.

So my Uncle had some interesting stuff that he had to work with while I was making my attempt to grow up.

He's one of those parent's that never gives in to his kid.  But he'll make sure you know that he's got your back without telling you.

In middle school, I had a project to do on the Washington Monument.  I did all my research, found out all the details, and wrote a complete report. I was so proud.  But then I had to construct a model of it.  I seriously tired.  I cut all this paper, made all these measurements, tried to construct it to scale, and ended up with a leaning, two canned tower, with a paper cone top.  I was so depressed and the presentation was due the next day. I just couldn't do it and had given up.

After we had dinner that night, my Uncle called me over, sat me down and he grabbed his briefcase.  A complete model, constructed to scale, of the Washington Monument appeared. One inch was equal to 37 feet in real life.  

So how do go about making a name for yourself?

A. Steal your parents car to go for a joy ride and brag about it to all your friends..

or....

B. Do you put others ahead of yourself and reach out with the love of God to help someone with a dire need...

I think I have a good idea

Jack and Jayne have known me throughout my life:  as a kid, as a Christ Crusader, as a young teen, as a college student, and as an adult.  They met Amy later when she and I started dating and got to know her better after we got married and started a family. Throughout our 35 years of marriage, we were blessed to have them as our friends.

I have so many recollections of Jack that I would have to write a small book to describe the great times we had with Jack and Jayne. I would like to share two fond memories I have of Jack.

Riding in Jack’s convertible!  Being a Chinatown kid, it was the first time I had ever sat in one. It was SO cool!  I was a Christ Crusader (9 year old) and we were headed on a Saturday club social.  Bing, Jack’s brother who oversaw the Crusaders, asked Jack to help drive some of us in his car for the outing.  I was one of the lucky ones to be chosen. We all crammed into the convertible and away we went! We were having a great time riding in that convertible, feeling the open air pushing against our faces, when all of a sudden Jack was pulled over by a police officer for having too many occupants in the car.  All of us felt really bad.  Here he was doing something for the Lord, doing his brother a favor, and now he was about to get a ticket.  All of us prayed to the Lord silently as Jack spoke to the policeman. He explained why he had so many kids in his car and where he was taking us. The police officer let him go and did not issue him a ticket. It was a great unforgettable moment for a young kid like me-getting to ride in a fancy convertible and seeing the power of answered prayer, all at the same time.

Fast forward, I’m now a teen and Jack is in his 30’s.  We’re at a church picnic and my teenage friends are playing a game of touch football against Jack and his “old timer” friends. Jack is assigned to watch me. Keep in mind that these are my teen years, which means that I am at the height of my “trash-talking days.”  “You can’t keep up with me, Jack. I’m too fast for you. Too quick, too nimble. You might as well concede the touchdown to me now.”  Jack, of course, would shoot back with “We’ll see Jay. You better show some respect to your elders cause we’re gonna whip you guys!”  On this particular day, I get the better of Jack and manage to catch some passes on him.  Lining up again, I say to Jack in my lighthearted “cocky and mocking” tone of voice, “I’m just too fast for you. Huh, Jack?!”  Jack allows me to run by him on the next play and then comes behind me and “clips” me. (It’s where you run behind a player and throw a block into the back of his legs to take him down; it’s illegal.)  Jack, however, doesn’t do it hard to hurt me.  I’m on my back, lying on the ground. He looks straight down at me and says, “Who’s too fast for me now?!!” The both of us start laughing so hard that I am rolling on the ground, unable to get up.  It was great. A side note:  We did beat the old timers.

Amy and I and our boys have had wonderful times with Jack and Jayne and their family: The Lake House, camping, getting together at their home for sumptuous meals, talking about the Bears, Jack and Jayne coming to Naperville to watch our son Jared wrestle, and going out to eat and getting Jack his favorite entrée-pork chops.

After Jack had his stroke, Amy had the opportunity to visit with Jack and Jayne during her lunch hour on an ongoing basis. She always told me how Jack remained steadfast in his faith, believing that God could work a miracle in his life. During their Friday visits, he was always interested in sharing something that he had read in the newspaper or heard on the radio. He also liked to share the accomplishments of his closest friends, like Frank Winkler, or the musical talents of his grandchildren by playing CDs of their music while they were eating lunch.

Amy appreciated Jack’s wry sense of humor, but mostly she cherished his unfailing ability to share his uncensored and unvarnished thoughts and opinions about almost everything. She knew that Jack always “shot from the hip” and didn’t hold back his feelings. And she valued that, because that meant that he was totally honest about how he felt. It also demonstrated to her the wisdom that Jack had about so many things. 

We always knew that Jack was blessed to have Jayne as his lifelong partner. But Jayne was also blessed in having a wonderful husband, provider, and loving and caring father of her children.

Thanks, Jack, for being such a great role model for us. We will really miss you …

There are two things that stand out for me about my dad.  The way he loved his wife and the way he loved his boys.

I saw my dad love my mom as a husband in many ways.  One of those ways was how he wanted to provide for her.  Many years ago, my mom told my dad of a specific type of convertible she liked.  When I took my dad to the Auto Show the last few years, that was all he wanted to look for.  Even up until last week, he was still talking about and looking for that car for her.  My dad also supported my mom in the many endeavors she was involved in.  Everything from cheering her on in marathons, illustrating a cook book for her, dropping her off and picking her up from hiking trips, or following along in the car on her crazy bike ride up to the lakehouse.  Because of his example, I strive to love my wife in some of these ways.

As a father, my dad showed us his love in many ways.  One of those ways was his faithful devotion to us.  Not only did he attend my swim meets, he also videotaped them.  Not only did he go on our band trips, he chaperoned for them.  Not only did he take us on ski trips, he taught us how to ski.  His faithful devotion spread from us to our school friends, our church friends, and now even to my own children's friends.  Because of his example, I strive to love my children in some of these ways.

My dad's lessons will stay with me forever.  But even more, he clung on to his faith, even to the end.  Thanks dad for living a good and faithful life.  Thanks for sharing it with us.

It was with great sadness that I learned of Jackson's passing.  Although I didn't see him frequently, "Mr. Gin" is somebody I've known most of my life.  I appreciated him as a partner and friend to my dad, Dick, and friend to my mom Roz.

I can't think of him without picturing that broad smile and bright, dancing eyes and his hand and arm outstretched to shake mine and inquire - with genuine interest - about how I'd been and what I was up to.  I'm so sorry he's gone. but grateful that all who knew him had such a truly fine person in our lives.

Dear Mrs. Gin,

Thank you for writing and sharing with us about Uncle Jack.  It saddened us deeply!  I always remember Uncle Jack as a remarkable man of faith especially in the toughest of circumstances.  I believe I came to the clinic to work just a few months after he experienced his stroke, so I didn't know him prior to that time.  In light of that, it was especially a treat to see the pictures you placed on the memorial website.  I'm sure he had some very difficult moments adjusting to his disability but he was often upbeat and didn't let his physical condition diminish his caring attitude and sense of humor.  I just appreciated that so much--that's my kind of hero!  I'm so glad we'll all see him again one day.  Thank you too for the example of your marriage...of being an example of continual love to each other in health and sickness!

Dear Jayne,

I like to remember Jack when he was full of energy, optimism, and the love of life.  He took such delight in his family, his work, his hobbies.  I also appreciated in his later years when Jack, with your help, led our Bible Study.  I felt God's presence and His working.  You both were an inspiration and blessing to me.

I know the last years were difficult for both of you.  You have shown such love and patience, a testimony of God's love.  I know Jack realized that too.  Jack cherished you and was so proud of his boys and grandchildren.  He was a good friend, and I hope you will always count on me as a friend.

Remember God's promises...He is our refuge and our strength...

Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart.  Ps 27:14

 Supporter and cheerleader – my dad encouraged and enabled us to do many things, even things he wouldn’t do himself.  Some of you know that my mom has run a few marathons.  She started because my dad believed in her and encouraged her to try.  Several of us have since tried to beat her time, but failed.  Yet, he kept encouraging me to try again to beat her time.  So now I’m crazy enough or stupid enough or stubborn enough (or probably all three) to try and run another one, to try to beat my mom’s time, and it’s all my dad’s fault!  If he hadn’t encouraged my mom to start running, if he hadn’t cheered and supported her along the way, she would’ve never posted such a fast time and I wouldn’t be beating up my body to try to beat her.  But that’s the power of his encouragement – he helped us achieve what we did not think we could do ourselves.
 His support was also evident when I told him I was thinking about changing careers from engineering to ministry.  He said, ‘God is bigger than me and if He’s calling you to ministry, I can’t stop you.’  And my dad supported me along the way.  He was so proud of the fact that I am a pastor, as I know he bragged about me behind my back.  One of the last trips he made up to MN was for my ordination several years ago – and I can still picture his beaming and proud smile.  
 My dad wanted the best for all of us and did everything in his power to help us succeed.  He was generous with us, he supported us in all our many activities, he cheered loudly for us at countless games and competitions, he equipped us with the best gear.  Thanks Dad, we love you and we’ll miss you.

Dear Uncle Jack,

We will always remember you for the awesome dinners we ate with you, watching football and baseball games in the cozy TV room. We cherished your wonderful wit and sharp sense of humor. We know that you always wanted others to know Jesus through your powerful life and example.

Dear Jack, as I think of you and the rest of the family, it brings so many happy memories to my mind:  camping trips, Mah Jongg games, Colorado in the summer, birthday parties, Marriott theater performances and dinner, and ice cream with toppings and whipped cream.  You were the neighbor who gave more than he received.  My children and parents always knew you were next door if they needed anything.  You will be missed. Love, Sandy
