Irene R Gerrans

Irene Gerrans was a twin her whole life. On its face, this statement seems funny...yet, it's the answer to a question she and "her older sister Marion" have been asked many times over the years. For 8 decades, they've been sisters, friends, roommates and constant companions. The dash between the date we arrive and the date we depart is what ultimately defines us. Irene spent "the dash" quietly making the world a better place.

After a long career as a corporate assistant, Irene spent her retirement years as a volunteer in various capacities at Northwestern Hospital, Fourth Presbyterian Church and the Center for Life and Learning. Content to remain in the background and never seeking attention or thanks, pursuits like tutoring or writing birthday cards to members truly made her happy.

Irene possessed a dry wit...a necessity growing up with a twin sister and two brothers, Ken and Bob. Sydney and Ruth Gerrans raised their family on the West Side of Chicago before moving to Downers Grove while the kids were in elementary school. Irene graduated from Downers Grove High School and began working in the Loop almost immediately. She and Marion have resided in Lincoln Park since 1977.

Her familiarity and love of the city led to a fostering of all it offers for her nieces and nephews, who grew up richer for the experiences. As a result, they learned to appreciate the culture, the neighborhoods, the restaurants and museums through her stewardship,. Irene was a dedicated "auntie" to Ken, Kathy, Kelley and "great auntie" to Randy, Stephanie, Brandon, Brooke, Corey, Jacob, Dylan and Murphy. Her smile and kindness will be missed, but her legacy lives on.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations be made in her name to the Lakeview Food Pantry, 3945 N. Sheridan Chicago, IL 60613...or, alternatively, simply perform a random act of kindness for a stranger. Irene would want you to make the most of your "dash". Details for a celebration of life will be forthcoming, once it becomes safe to gather again.
