It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of The Honorable Cynthia Soto on March 19, 2025. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and dedicated public servant, Cynthia’s life was defined by her unwavering love for family and her steadfast commitment to serving her community.
Cynthia was born in San Antonio, Texas, to Lydia Niera and Ignacio Sanchez, and later made Chicago her home, where she dedicated herself to advocacy and public service.
Cynthia proudly served as an Illinois State Representative for the 4th District from 2001 to 2019. Throughout her 18 years in office, she left a lasting impact on the lives of many. Her leadership and dedication to her constituents earned her deep respect throughout the community. As a member of key committees, some of Cynthia’s accomplishments included:
• Appropriations – Public Safety
• Financial Institutions
• Human Services
• Economic Opportunity
• Elementary & Secondary Education
• State Government Administration
• Health Care
Cynthia was a strong advocate for underserved communities, fighting for equitable policies that gave marginalized voices a platform. She worked tirelessly to improve immigrant rights and supported initiatives that fostered economic growth and public safety in her district. Her contributions to the development of community outreach programs and mentorship for future leaders left an indelible mark. Cynthia’s leadership also earned her various awards and recognitions throughout her career, further solidifying her legacy.
Beyond her work in public service, Cynthia was a source of love and strength to her family. She cherished time with her loved ones, always offering wisdom, kindness, and a warm heart to those around her.
Cynthia is survived by her loving husband, David, her daughters Jennifer, Jacqueline (George), and Jessica (Bradley), her cherished grandchildren Carlos, Ava, Chloe, Carter, and Harper. She is also survived by her siblings Alice, Ignacio, Hector, and Lydia, along with many dear relatives, friends, and colleagues who will forever hold her memory close.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the volunteers and every person who contributed to Cynthia's campaigns throughout her career. Their dedication and support made it possible for her to serve the community and represent her district with honor.
A visitation for Cynthia will be held Friday, March 28, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Montclair-Lucania Funeral Home, 6901 West Belmont Ave, Chicago, IL 60634.
A religious ceremony will occur Saturday, March 29, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at St Viator Catholic Church (St Viator-St Wenceslaus Parish), 4170 W Addison St, Chicago, IL 60641.
