Robert D. Heiss, 81, of Mayfield Heights, passed away Jan. 20, 2014, in Richmond Heights.Born Aug. 6, 1932, in Cleveland, he was a resident of Mayfield Heights since 1958.Robert was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Korea. His memberships included being past-commander of American Legion Post 759, Korean War Veterans, Collinwood Memories and Knights of Columbus Council 310. He was an avid bowler and golfer. Robert worked 43 years for Bailey Controls. He was a salesman and later an instructor on boilers used in power plants and iron carriers on Lake Erie. Two of the boats he worked on were the Edmund Fitzgerald and the William G. Mather.Survivors are his wife, Madeline (nee Ratino); children, Robert (Carol), Rick (Sue), Dean and Chris (Joe) Fekter; grandchildren, Erin Heiss, Ryan and Bradley Heiss, and Brandon and Anthony Fekter.He was preceded in death by his mother, Justine Heiss; and one sister and five brothers.Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014, at Saint Noel Church, 35200 Chardon Road, WIlloughby Hills. Rev. Georga Smiga will officiate.Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at DiCicco and Sons Funeral Home, 5975 Mayfield Road, Mayfield Heights. Burial will be in Knollwood Cemetery, Mayfield Heights.
