Lew was born in Monticello, Illinois on April 25, 1925, the youngest of seven children to Portius and Clara Wheeler.
An outstanding three sport star athlete, he graduated from Monticello High School in 1943 and was named All-State in baseball as a senior. His father often joked that “his youngest son was born with a ball in his hand”.
Lew enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after graduation, serving in the Pacific Theater and the post-war occupation of Japan. Lew would say often, “I was asked to do things no nineteen year old should have to do” and “I was no hero. I did what I was told and then some. The real heroes did not come home.”
Returning home in 1946, Lew attended the University of Illinois where he played varsity baseball for his beloved Fighting Illini. The Wheelers have lived in Chagrin Falls for over 60 years.
Beginning in the early 1970’s, Lew served the youth of the Chagrin Valley for over 20 years. He was one of the founding members of the Chagrin Athletic Association and was acting President and Commissioner of baseball, football and basketball. Recognized for his work with young people and the community, Lew was named 1974 Jaycee “Man of the Year”.
He was a passionate golfer and fisherman well into his 80’s.
Lew worked for the Forrest Products Division of Olin Corporation for 25 yrs. He then started his own company Wheeler & Associates, retiring at age 70, but continued to consult into his 90’s.
