John F. Malloy “Papa John”, passed away after a short illness on Sunday, December 23, 2018 at his home in Chesterland, Ohio. Born in Cleveland, Ohio on September 5, 1921, he has been a resident of Chesterland for 50 years. John was a 1936 Graduate of Gesu Catholic School in University Heights, Ohio, a 1940 Graduate of St. Ignatius High School, and later studied Pre-Engineering at John Carroll University.
He was a proud part of the greatest generation. He was a World War II Veteran, a Corporal 806th Army Air Forces Base Unit Fort Wayne, Indiana, and earned the World War II Victory Medal. During his service he was also a member of the Army ski troops, Camp Hale, Colorado. He also received a Certificate of Recognition from U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. John was the first American ever to receive a European ski instructor diploma from St. Anton, Austria. He was a member of Carpenters Union Local 435, the Neighborhood Breakfast Club, and the Church of Saint Anselm in Chesterland. After retirement, John enjoyed spending his time remodeling the house and tending his vegetable garden. He was very proud of his Irish heritage and attended many annual St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. John’s hobbies included woodworking, skiing, fishing, boating, birdwatching, listening to Big Band radio 91.5 FM, and watching the Lawrence Welk TV show. He is survived by his children Catherine A. Malloy (Ken Vaught), John J. Malloy, Alice F. Malloy (Reg Oberlag), and Mary N. Malloy; grandchildren Anna R. Vaught and John W. Vaught; sister-in-law Sophie M. Wilson; and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, friends & neighbors. John is predeceased by his wife of 55 years Alice J. (Ridzon) Malloy (Married August 25, 1956); parents Catherine A. (Conry) Malloy and Frank J. Malloy; sister Catherine R. Malloy; and brother-in-law Henry Ridzon. Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 am, Saturday December 29, 2018 at the Church of Saint Anselm, 12969 Chillicothe Rd., Chesterland. Visitation at the church one hour prior to Mass. Interment St. Mary’s Church in Wakeman, OH. A Reception will follow beginning at 2:30 pm at Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse, 26300 Chagrin Blvd., Beachwood, OH 44122. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to St. Mary Catholic Church, 46 E. Main St., P. O. Box 576, Wakeman, Ohio 44889.
