He was born in Old Fort, TN in 1923, one of 12 children. He was a graduate of Polk County High School and worked for the Post Office in Polk County. Upon moving to Chattanooga at the age of 21, he began working at the Chattanooga Gas Co. and retired after 45 years of service as the General Superintendent. He loved living on his farm in Higdon, AL for 28 years. He was a lifetime member of the Downtown Sertoma Club where he received many service awards as well as having 20 years perfect attendance, and a current member and deacon of First Presbyterian Church. He also volunteered for many years at Changed Lives. One of the things he enjoyed was bluegrass music.
He was preceded in death by his parents Chester and Mary Mantooth, his son Mike Mantooth, three brothers: Knoble, Donald, and Herschel; three sisters: Bennie Lee Bryan, Faye Harmon, and Nina Lillard. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Doris Fann Mantooth. He is also survived by his daughter Janet (John) Russell of Flintstone, GA and daughter LuAnne (Mark) Kessel of Chattanooga, and daughter-in-law Cindi Mantooth of Dallas, TX, his grandchildren: Becky (Rob) Sides, Brett (Erin) Ellis, Maxx Mantooth, Macy (Paul) Chamberlain, Ellen (John) Cafaro and Wilson Kessel and 5 great grandchildren: Madison and Austin Sides, Emily and Bailey Ellis and Nathanael Chamberlain, and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by four sisters: Birdie Wright of Chattanooga, Juanita Pritchard of Cleveland, TN, Elsie Moore of Waco, KY, and Pauline Cherry of Dalton, GA.
The family will receive friends on Saturday at 10:00 at First Presbyterian Church. A celebration of life service will immediately follow at 11:00 in the sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to Cherokee Area Council of Boy Scouts of America, Changed Lives, or a charity of your choice.
