He graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in Music and served several years as Music Minister at Loudon United Methodist Church in Loudon, Tennessee.

Jim served in the US Air Force until he was placed on temporary disability in 1956. He was retired from Golden Gallon Convenience Stores as the Vice President of Property Development .
Jim (aka – Jimmyz, Zman, Bubba, Papa Jim) loved life and spending time with friends and family. He was an avid reader, enjoyed playing golf, and painting on canvas, and playing the guitar.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Wiley F Zimmerman and Louise R Zimmerman.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Dawn Newton Zimmerman; son, Mark Zimmerman; son, Cary Zimmerman and wife Ranee, son, Todd Zimmerman and daughter-in-law Nikki Zimmerman. The loves of his life – grandchildren, Cara Paige Zimmerman, Joshua Zimmerman, Elijah Zimmerman, Avery Zimmerman, and Benjamin Zimmerman. Jim is also survived by his twin sister, Marilyn Zimmerman-Cotten McMichael (Tommie), nephew Fred Cotten, niece Karen Beam and husband Nolan Beam, and cousins Leslie Gallaher, Ina Lee Roe, and David Gallaher. He is also survived by many special friends and extended family members that loved him and that he loved very much.
The family will receive friends Sunday, September 15, 2013 from 2-4 p.m. Additional visitation will be Monday, September 16, 2013 from 12-1 p.m. at the East Brainerd Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home followed by Graveside Memorial Services at 1:30 p.m. in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Military Honors.
