Born in 1932 in Sylva, NC he also lived in Franklin and Bryson City, NC until 1952. Subsequently, he spent time in Roanoke, VA and Harrisburg, PA before settling permanently in Chattanooga, TN.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War as Operations Sergeant in Korean Communications Zone, Long Lines Signal Group, 8226 Army Unit. He was a proud member of American Legion Post #14 in Chattanooga.
A curious, life-long student, he earned a B.S. Degree in Business Administration from Western Carolina University in 1959 and M.A. in Behavioral Sciences from Middle Tennessee State University in 1973.
After working in insurance and the trucking industry, he found his career passion in teaching. He was a professor of Behavioral Sciences at Chattanooga State Community College, retiring in 2003 at age 71, after 33 years of dedicated service.
Along with Patrick Hatfield, he was co-founder of the first Highway Alcohol Safety Project in the state of Tennessee and was the Chief Instructor for this program for over 20 years, helping educate offenders and making Chattanooga’s roads a safer place.
He unabashedly loved the Lord and faithfully served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher for many years in both Presbyterian and Baptist churches.
He was preceded in death by his father, James A. Sutton, Sr. and mother, Evelyn Brimer Sutton. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Sana Herron Sutton, son, James A. Sutton, III, twin daughters, Kelly Smith and Leslie Nation, granddaughters Katelyn Sutton, Madeline Nation, Savannah Smith and Sara Kate Smith, grandsons Patrick Sutton and Alex Nation, twin great granddaughters Bryleigh and Bailyn Sutton and brother, Samuel Sutton.
Services will be held at Chattanooga Funeral Home-Valley View Chapel on Friday, June 23rd. Visitation with light refreshments will be held from 9-11 AM with a memorial service in the chapel at 11 AM. Interment will follow at the Chattanooga National Cemetery. All are welcome to attend the celebration of his life.
