It's been three years brother, and I miss you.

I was saddened to learn of Harry's death.  I knew him when he was a graduate student at the University of Delaware, where I taught, and always enjoyed his lively personality and love for history.  My condolences to the Hays family.

I am flooded with memories from my childhood, youth and young adulthood of times spent with Harry.   We lost touch over the years.  We saw each other at funerals, but we never 'had that beer' we talked about.  I regret that.   The simple message in the obituary of his devotion to family and friends rings so true, as is attested by the statements from Don, Moonpie, Bill, Randall and others.

Harry moved behind my house when we were 4 years old, so we had known each other for 66 years. I have a lot of fantastic memories of us playing wiffle ball in his back yard with his brothers, and playing different sports in the park with the neighborhood gang.
  After high school we went to different colleges, and we both got married and raised kids. We didn’t see each other often, but when we did run into each other, we always partied a little!
  At my brother Skip’s funeral, Harry was there, and we rekindled our friendship. 
  Harry and Scottie came to mine and Judy’s wedding in March, 2020. We all enjoyed hiking around Signal Mountain. Harry and I also enjoyed watching sports and talking about UT football and basketball. 
  I’ll always cherish my friendship with Harry. He was a good person, and will be missed very much!!!!

Harry and I shared good times together, racing stick toy rafts on a Smokey Mountain stream, traveling with the top down, camping at outdoor concerts, and the music; it was always about the music. Around Harry and Scottie's coffee table, talking philosophy, history, and politics late into the night, I always felt welcomed in their home. Harry's intelligence and love of life have left me grateful for having known him.

I first met Harry when he was at McCallie School, in the 1960s. Harry was always joyful and positive. Every time I saw Harry through the years, he was the same, and it was a joy to know Harry Hays.

I was stunned to hear about the passing of my dear friend. My thoughts go out to Scottie, Alex, Ethan, and the grandchildren. Harry meant so much to me. I will miss his wit and humor terribly. He was a very special person who cared deeply for his family and friends.

Harry loved good food...especially apple pie!


When someone has been your friend for more than 58 years, the memories (good, bad, fun, funny) are far too many to even begin.  So let me say, simply put,  Harry Hays was a wonderful person.  Scottie will tell you he was a wonderful husband.  Alex and Ethan will tell you he was a wonderful father.  The grand kids will tell you he was  a wonderful grandfather.  All the cats and dogs will tell you he was a wonderful animal lover.  His friends will tell you he was a wonderful friend and I know because I was honored to be one of them.
