He was born on February 26, 1931, to the late Amos and Christine Ownby. He was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.
David retired after 32 years of service as a boiler maker with Combustion Engineering. He will be remembered as a kind, soft spoken man who led his family as a strong man of faith. He was a loving, godly husband, father and friend who was always ready to listen and help others. He was a very skilled handyman of many talents and loved by all.
He was a member of the Crawfish Springs Masonic Lodge #300 F&AM and had also served many years as a deacon at church.
He was also a member of Oakwood Baptist Church.
Survivors include his loving wife of 69 years, Joan Ownby, three children, Teresa (Johnny) Johnson, of Ooltewah, Monty (Kelly) Ownby, of Chattanooga, Mitchell (Carol) Ownby, of Ooltewah, nine grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, August 19, 2019, in the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Pastor Eric Dill officiating. Interment will follow at Lakewood Memory Gardens – East.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Sunday, August 18, 2019, at the funeral home.
