William Ridgway Plumer, aged 89, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2024, at his home in Chatham, Ma surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on March 8, 1935 in Waban, MA, to William and Jane Plumer. He graduated high school from Governor Dummer Academy and then went on to Harvard University where he graduated in 1957 with a degree in government. He was a member of the Hasty Pudding Club and the Harvard Club of Boston. Bill worked as a senior partner at Brewer and Lord Insurance Company from 1961-1996.
He was well respected in the industry and was known for creating strong and lasting relationships with his clients. Bill raised his family in Wellesley, MA and summered in Chatham, MA where he eventually retired. He was a member of the Chatham Beach and Tennis Club where he served as a past president. He was also a member of Eastward Ho and Brae Burn Country Club. Each of these venues afforded him the ability to enjoy his love for tennis, golf and paddle tennis. In addition to being a great athlete he loved his dahlia garden, playing bridge and was a loyal and passionate Boston sports fan.
Bill was a generous, kind and gentle man who was loved dearly by family and friends. He made the best of every situation and lived life with optimism up until the end. Everyone who knew him loved him. Bill is predeceased by his sister, Jane Mansfield, his parents, William and Jane Plumer and son in law, Craig Kraft.
Bill is survived by his wife, Audrey Capen Plumer, and their three daughters: Susan Miller and her husband Frederick, Pamela Kraft and Julie Johnson and her husband Robert, 7 grandchildren Lauren, Jennifer, Ryan, Nicholas, Scott, Jack and Christopher and 3 great grandchildren Harper, Owen and Maxwell.
A memorial service in celebration of Bill’s life will be held in the summer of 2025.
