Visitation will be from 9-10:30am with a Memorial Service starting at 10am at Nickerson Funeral Home in Chatham on Saturday, September 10, 2022, immediately followed by interment at Union Cemetery, Chatham.
Susan was born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania to the late Charles H. Carpenter, Jr., and Mary Grace Carpenter. Raised in New Canaan, Connecticut, she was a resident of Chatham for 45 years. Educated at the University of New Hampshire, University of Massachusetts, and Fitchburg State, she was the loving wife of Richard P. Curcio for 58 years, the mother of Matthew and Ben (wife, Amy) and the proud grandmother of Thomas. Always in her heart were her extended family and friends, especially her brother, Phillip, and sister, Shelley.
Serving as a special needs teacher, a yarn shop owner, and Orleans Senior Center Activities Director gave Susan much pleasure and a sense of purpose. Being a world traveler, Susan loved the thrill of experiencing different cultures and people. In her last years, she enjoyed volunteering as President of the Chatham Garden Club. Susan’s eye for beauty was expressed in the love of landscape gardening. Flowers for viewing pleasure and vegetables for the palate were abundantly shared with friends and family. Her tomatoes were made into sauce and her butternut squash were made into both savory and sweet treats.
Many were her community activities with her husband and friends. Among them were Cape Cod Opera, Cape Cod Tech foreign exchange program with Beijing, China, volunteering at the Marconi Center, the Atwood House, and years of Tai Chi with Sally. Donations in Susan’s memory can be made to the Chatham Garden Club, the Chatham Historical Society, or the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center.
