BREWSTER – Phyllis (Toon) LeMaitre died on June 18, 2012 at Epoch Healthcare Facility of Brewster. Phyllis was born in Dalbeattie, Scotland on February 2, 1914 and sailed to New York with her parents and older sister Hazel when she was 3 months old. She lived in Troy, NY until age 3 when her family moved to Boston, MA. Phyllis was educated in the Boston schools and was a graduate of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy where she was a member of Rho Chi Honor Society and Lambda Kappa Sigma Sorority.
Phyllis and her husband Lucien moved to Albany, NY after their marriage in 1942 and later moved to Delmar, NY in 1950 where she raised her two sons.
Phyllis was a charter member and first chairman of the Bethlehem Garden Club, was a member of the Delmar Progressive Club and active in the Federated Garden Group. She entered many Standard Flower Shows and won many blue ribbons in Artistic and Horticulture Divisions. She was a member of the Delmar Methodist Church where she was active in the Women’s Society for Christian Services.
Phyllis many hobbies and talents included Early American Decorating creating innumerable pieces of painted tin, stenciled pieces and theorems which now grace the homes of family and friends. She also loved cross stitching, crewel embroidery, gardening and sewing.
In 1973 Phyllis and her husband retired to Chatham, MA where they worked on landscaping design at their new home. While living in Chatham she was a member of the Chatham Congregational Church where she was active in making many craft items for the annual summer fair.
After the death of her Husband she moved to Heatherwood of Yarmouth Port where she lived with her younger sister May Christina Toon. While at Heatherwood she was a member of the First Congregational Church of Yarmouth.
Phyllis’ family would like to that the staff at Epoch of Brewster Senior Health Care for all their professionalism, care and kindnesses extended to Phyllis and her family. The staff of the Lincoln unit played a major roll in making Epoch Phyllis’ home for the last four years.
Phyllis is survived by her sister May Christina Toon, two sons and their wives Charles H. LeMaitre and Lyn of Peck’s Lake, Gloversville, NY, William D. LeMaitre and his wife Anne of Brewster, Grand-Daughter D’Arcy Share of Ringgold, GA and her children Dilyn, Cassidy, Ryan, Paige and Riley, Grand-Son Charles H. LeMaitre, Jr. of Gloverville, NY. Phyllis was pre-deceased by her husband of 45 years Lucien, parents William Toon and Eliza (Adams) Toon and step-mother Jamima (Elliot), brother William D. Toon (killed during WWII), sister Hazel and step sister Betsy E. Breed.
Calling hours will be held at Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Rd, Chatham, MA on Monday, June 25 at 11:30 a.m. with a service at 12:30 p.m. Burial will be at the Union Cemetery in Chatham.
