Mary J. Higgins passed peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, February 20, 2022 at Maplewood at Brewster. Mary was born in Franklin, PA but grew up outside of Erie, PA in Wesleyville, PA. She graduated from Wesleyville H.S. and then moved to Cleveland, OH, where she attended St. Lukes nursing school and graduated with her R.N. in 1955.
Afterwards, she moved to Dallas, TX to work at Parkland Hospital. It’s in Dallas where she met her future husband, John ‘Jack’ T. Higgins (pre-deceased) and were married on August 31, 1959. They made stops in North Dakota, Minnesota, New York, England, and finally settling down in Poughkeepsie, NY. Mary loved her nursing job and in the mid-1970’s, Mary, became the Director of the Hypertension Treatment Center in Poughkeepsie, NY, bringing care and knowledge into the underserved community. Mary and Jack moved to their beloved Chatham, MA, where she began a second career as a real estate agent.
Mary is survived by her four children; Stephen and wife Diane (Franklin, MA); Mary Elizabeth (Cambridge, MA); David (Poughkeepsie, NY); Peter and wife Heather (Chatham, MA) and her seven grandchildren; Stephen Jr., Tyler, Katelyn, Austin, Nicole, Abigail, Samuel, and one great-grandchild Clare.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, February 26th at 10 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church, Highland Ave, Chatham, MA. A private burial will be in Union Cemetery.
