Born to Lt. Colonel Henry and Ardena Hunt on December 3, 1931 in Bristol, Connecticut, Marshall spent most of his formative years in Durham, New Hampshire, where he attended a one-room school house from grades 1-8 followed by high school in Dover. Following in his father's footsteps, Marshall was a second-generation graduate from the University of New Hampshire in 1953. He later earned a Master of Education Degree from Michigan State University.
In pursuit of his call to ordained ministry in the Episcopal church, he completed seminary studies at the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1956. He subsequently was called as Curate at St. James Episcopal Church in Keene, New Hampshire. In 1958, Marshall accepted his first call to rectorship at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Hillsdale, Michigan. He continued to serve as Rector for several churches in the Diocese of Michigan, most notably: St. John's, Royal Oak and Grace Episcopal Church, Detroit. Upon returning to his New England roots in 1969 to serve as Rector of St. Anne's Episcopal Church, Lowell, Massachusetts, Marshall also held various leadership positions at State and National Church levels. He served as member of the House of Deputies Committee on the State of the Church, as Chair of the Standing Liturgical Commission, as a Stewardship leader for the Diocese of Massachusetts, as a Diocesan Chaplain to Retired Clergy and their families, and as Interim Rector for numerous Episcopal churches from New England to Washington D.C.
Marshall's legacy initially played out in the heart of Detroit throughout the riotous decades of the 1960's. During his tenure at Grace Episcopal Church, Detroit, he worked tirelessly on the front lines with ecumenical and political leaders in an effort to resolve issues of social injustice and racial inequality. Marshall's compassion for those who were less able to realize safe harbor remained steadfast throughout his life.
Two particular joys for Marshall were sport and travel. The former included skiing and his love for the game of lacrosse. He showed his prowess as a varsity mid-fielder at UNH and later with the Detroit Lacrosse Club. In following years, he found himself chasing plays on the field as a collegiate lacrosse referee throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic states. Additionally, Marshall had a love for travel. He seized any opportunity to open the pages of his Rand McNally map and re-plotted trips of the past, while planning with the greatest of detail those for the future.
Marshall is survived by his beloved wife, the Reverend Victoria Wells Hunt of East Harwich, Massachusetts with whom he shared 19 years of marriage and ministry. Marshall leaves his son, Dale Marshall Hunt and his wife, Mary of West Chester, Pennsylvania, and his granddaughter, Kara Noel Baxter and her husband, Kyle of West Chester, Pennsylvania. Along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, Marshall is survived by his siblings, Rae Harling Wilson of Shalimar, Florida, and Nancy Hunt Hopkins of West Chester, Pennsylvania. Marshall also leaves behind Noel Claire Hunt of Longmont, Colorado with whom he shared decades of parenthood. In addition to his parents, Marshall was predeceased by close family and friends with particular mention given to Patricia Elizabeth Hunt.
A Celebration of Life Service will be scheduled at a later date.
