Gordon John Pearce, 83, passed away peacefully on April 7 at Liberty Commons with members of his loving family present. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Gloria Neives Pearce, and his devoted children Beth Bailey and husband Richard of Arlington, Virginia, Peter Pearce and his wife Mary of Milford, Connecticut, Mark Pearce and his wife Katrina Billings of Norridgewock, Maine, and John Pearce and his wife Liz of Glen Allen, Virginia. His memory will also be cherished by his grandchildren Peter and Kate Bailey, William and Emily Pearce, Siobhan and Regan Billings-Pearce, and Carly, Shelly, Mandy and Lexie Pearce.
Gordon grew up in Dobbs Ferry, New York. He served in the US Army during World War II and was stationed in Germany. Upon completion of his military service, he was employed by Con Edison of New York and retired after 34 years as a district manager.
In 1984, he and Gloria retired to Chatham, a place he dearly loved. He spent his time fishing, playing golf, building model boats, creating beautiful stained glass for family and friends, and volunteering for many organizations including the Chatham Methodist Church and St. Martin’s Lodge, where he mentored young men studying to take their Masonic degrees.
Gordon’s true love was the Coast Guard Auxiliary where he gave much of his time and energy. He was a watchstander twice a week, a coxswain, instructor, air observer, patrolled the harbor, and inspected pleasure and fishing boats. He held several leadership offices in the organization including Flotilla Commander and Communication Officer. He was recently awarded the Coast Guard Auxiliary Meritorious Service Medal.
His visitation will be held on Sunday, April 11, 2010 from 2-5 p.m. in the Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Road, Chatham, Ma. His funeral service will be held on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church, 16 Cross Street, Chatham, MA. His burial will be private at a later date.
