Frederick Leland Rhodes, 82, of Chatham, MA, died peacefully on September 18. He was born May 18, 1939, to Leland and Thea Rhodes in Summit, NJ. He was raised in Short Hills, NJ where he lived for the next sixty-eight years. He is survived by his wife, Laura Sibley Rhodes, and his daughter and son-in-law, Thea and Patrick Dolan of West Barnstable, MA. He was preceded in death by his son, Leland Chandler Rhodes in 1990.
Fred attended Pomfret, and graduated from Short Hills County Day School, and Boston University with a BA in English Literature. He served in the Army Reserve for 6 1/2 years. He worked for the Bank of NY and Mutual Benefit Life Insurance during his career.
Fred and Laura retired to their beloved summer home in Chatham, MA in 2006. Fred enjoyed all that the Cape had to offer - golf, clamming, boating, nature, playing bridge and most of all, spending time with good friends. In all these pursuits, Fred was the consummate competitor. The Rhodes spent their winters in Charleston, SC.
Fred, otherwise known as Dusty to his friends, was a great wit, and his frequent, pithy tributes at friends' birthdays and anniversaries were memorable. His standing response to "How are you?" was "Better than some!" He will be remembered as "Better than Most".
A service is planned October 1st at 11am at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Chatham, MA. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Friends of Pleasant Bay - fopb.wildapricot.org
