Ernest Joseph Julien Mandeville, 92, of Glastonbury passed away on October 1 2014 in Chatham MA. His daughter, Elizabeth, was helping to provide hospice care, and his wife Harriet (Colwell) was also present. Ernest was born November 2, 1921 in New Bedford MA to George and Helene (Bourcier). Ernie spent summers in Chatham MA. He was employed by Newington Board of Education, and worked as a General Science teacher and guidance counselor.
When Ernie was 16 years old, he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corp. in New Hampshire. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942. He was a gunner and radio man on a B-26 Martin “Blasted Event.” He flew up to 63, unlimited, missions and flew over Utah beach during D-day. He had been a carpenter and enjoyed general maintenance of his property, lent neighbors tools and equipment, enjoyed fishing and clamming to provide food for his family. He swam regularly, and was extremely fit inspite of his physical limitations. He enjoyed watching Frontline on PBS, and was an avid reader.
He leaves behind his wife, Harriet, son, Bill of Merritt Island FL, daughters, Ann of Glastonbury and Elizabeth of Merritt Island FL. His grandchildren include Gregory Thomas, Camden Stryjewski, Rachel Mandeville and MacLaine Stryjewski. He also leaves a brother, Raymond, sister, Yvonne many nieces and nephews in New Bedford MA.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to Chatham Fire and Rescue Department. They have been helpful and kind to him and his wife.
