On Tuesday, February 3, 2015, Carolyn Helene Fitzpatrick, a longtime Chatham resident, passed away. She was born in Boston and raised in West Roxbury. As a young adult, she attended Boston University, stopping off at Fenway Park to attend Red Sox games after class. After WWII she married her high school sweetheart William Fitzpatrick.
As a 1941 graduate of BU, she taught English Literature at Wellesley High School from the late 1960’s until her retirement in 1983. Her honors classes focused on typologies of myth and on English of the Middle Ages.
Her full time residence in the town of Chatham began in 1984, but her love of the town began in the 1940’s when, together with her sister Joan, she worked summers as a waitress at the Chatham Bars Inn.
Carolyn enjoyed a full life as a retiree in Chatham, joining and working as an officer for numerous groups (New England Weavers, the Chatham Reading Club, and other reading bridge groups). She was very active at the Holy Redeemer Church, where she taught CCD and served as a lector at Sunday Masses.
Carolyn’s family loved spending time with her, traveling around the world, enjoying restaurants and fine red wines, and going to the beach. She is survived by her sister Joan, brother-in-law Raymond, her son Bill, her daughter-in-law Dianne and her beloved granddaughters Elizabeth and Amanda.
The funeral Mass will be held Monday, February 9, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Holy Redeemer Church, 57 Highland Ave, Chatham. The Mass will be followed by burial at Union Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, we'd like to suggest that donations be made to Broad Reach Hospice & Palliative Care, the Lower Cape Outreach Council, or any other cause that reminds you of Carolyn.
