It is with deep sadness that the family of Brenda Lucas announces her passing on February 4, 2018 at the age of 78. Born on January 23, 1940 in Easton, MA, she was the daughter of Chester and Ruth Hackett. Brenda was a 1957 graduate of Chatham High School, and in 1958 she married Paul Lucas and together they raised two children, Ted and Cindy.
Brenda spent the summers working at her parents’ restaurant, the Port Fortune, along with many of her family members. Later, Brenda worked at Fancy Farms for several years.
While staying at home for a time to raise her children, Brenda enjoyed rug hooking, and making ceramic figures. She also was a Brownie leader.
She enjoyed hosting many of the family gatherings at her home, where she served the best homemade dinners and cakes.
Brenda was a life time member of the coffee gang at Larry’s PX, where she enjoyed spending time with her close friends over coffee.
Brenda was instrumental in organizing the Captain Eelgrass events raising money for local charities. She also looked forward to the scallop season where she could be found shucking scallops in the shanty.
She enjoyed having special time with her five grandchildren who all lived nearby, and was their biggest fan at sporting, musical, and dance events. She also loved taking them to the beach.
Her favorite vacation spot was Sanibel Island and Walt Disney World in Florida, where she and Paul became expert “shell seekers” finding many rare shells in the area. They spent many winters down there and enjoyed the company of family members who came to visit.
Brenda was predeceased by her husband Paul in February 2017, her brother Gary Hackett, and sister Valerie Gaus. Brenda is survived by her son Ted Lucas, daughter Cindy (Lucas) Devlin and her husband Steve. She was the loving grandmother (Mimi) of Jessica (Lucas) Allen and her husband John of Charleston, SC; John Devlin of Norwood, MA; Scott Devlin, Matt Lucas and Jason Lucas all of Chatham, MA. She will be deeply missed also by her beloved sisters Diane Browning and Rhonda Hackett, along with Linda Lucas and countless cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the caring and attentive Liberty Commons nursing home staff and the staff of VNA Hospice. Much kindness and respect was shown to Brenda, and the family is extremely appreciative.
The funeral will take place on Monday, February 12th at 11 AM at Nickerson Funeral Home, followed by burial at Union Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Chatham Fire and Rescue, 135 Depot Rd, Chatham, MA 02633.
