Barbara B. Mustard

Barbara Bakewell Mustard, also known as “BB”, died peacefully on July 26, 2016 in Chatham, MA. She was born in Pittsburg, PA, to Benjamin and Estelle (Dunn) Bakewell on Feb. 1, 1923. She spent her childhood in Sewickley (PA) and Delray Beach (FL) with her father, and in Hyannis Port and Wellesley (MA) with her mother. She attended Dana Hall and Wellesley College. She married Robert Morris Mustard, Sr., on July 20, 1946…as she recalled, “the hottest day of the summer”. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert M. Mustard, Jr. (Chip) and Kate Sturgis Mustard of Duxbury and Chatham (MA); her daughter and son-in law, Lee Mustard Sargent and Daniel Alec Sargent of West Chop (MA) and Bethesda (MD). To her daughter, Marion McCoy Mustard, who predeceased her, she devoted her loving care and attention throughout her life. She is also predeceased by her sister, Betty. She took much pride and joy in her five grandchildren, Heather Mustard Lovett, Lindsay Mustard Murray, Daniel Caleb Sargent, Laura Welles Sargent, and Cameron Post Burnham. She delighted in her four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Marlene Mustard Graf, Judy W. Ross, and Camilla W. McConnell, and her cousins, Jenifer and Cherry Bakewell, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

At a young age her passion for flowers flourished when she began working at Fraser’s Flowers in Wellesley. She took great pride in developing the “Art in Bloom” program at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 1975. She served on numerous committees at the Vincent Club and Junior League, and supported meaningful causes and charities throughout her life.

Barbara and Bob belonged to Wellesley Country Club and Bald Peak (NH), and she was a member of the Chilton Club (Boston). In the mid-80s, they moved to Chatham (Cape Cod), where they continued to entertain…train rides, mini-golf cocktail parties and cruises. She always graciously entertained friends and family. As members of Eastward Ho! CC (since 1962), along with their friends the Carpenters, they were responsible for bringing the Chowder Bowl to the club. They had great fun and left a heritage for others to do so also.

Though she used to say “flowers are the best gift, as they never overstay their welcome”, she would appreciate your donation to the MS Society in her and Marion’s memory.
