Alexander David Shaw III, known affectionately to friends and family as “Sandy” passed away on May 2, 2021. Born in Paterson, New Jersey, on October 9, 1930 to Alexander David Shaw II and Kathleen Braitmayer Shaw.
Known for his intelligence and wit, Sandy was an accomplished chemist and maintained a lifelong interest in technology, music, books and travel. He was a beloved storyteller whose keen wit was punctuated by his ever charming, clever expressions and a keen memory for detail. After graduating from Wesleyan University in 1952, he held several leadership positions as both a chemical engineer and product development manager with Uniroyal Chemical Company in Naugatuck, CT for 25 years. In 1978, he moved to Warwick, RI where he worked at Mearthane Products Corporation. He became president of Polyair America Incorporated, a position he held until retiring to Chatham, MA.
Sandy served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army reserves from 1956 until he was honorably discharged in 1964.
He was married to Evelyn Leutters Shaw who predeceased him in 2018, and is survived by his four children; Christopher Shaw of Boulder, CO, Susan M Shaw of Harwich, MA, Kathleen Wallace of Atherton, CA, and Charles R Shaw of Newtown, CT. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Christopher Kupka, Isabel Shaw, Jack Wallace, Alec Wallace, Catherine Shaw, and Lila Wallace, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
A private memorial service will be held at St. Christopher’s Church in Chatham, MA where he will remain at rest. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Alexander’s name to The Alzheimer’s Family Support Center of Cape Cod, 2095 Main Street, Brewster, MA 02631.
