Bob was born on December 17, 1935, in Wise County, Virginia, to the late Horace B. and Louise Osborne Cross. He was a graduate of Roanoke College and the University of Virginia’s Darden School, served our country as a Marine, and enjoyed a 25+ year career with IBM.
Bob always had a ready smile, light-hearted quip, and sense of integrity that drew many people to him. He was deeply passionate about the University of Virginia and an avid supporter of the school overall as well as the football, basketball, and tennis teams. And he didn’t keep this passion to himself. He repeatedly told his children and grandchildren that they could attend any college they wanted so long as it was based in Charlottesville, Virginia!
Bob was an active member of the Charlottesville community over the course of his life. He was passionate about tennis, playing competitively for many years and continuing to play with friends up to last year. He served on the board of directors of the Charlottesville senior center and of his homeowners association. And he was active in Albemarle County real estate matters, including participation in the Crozet master planning process.
More than anything, Bob was a devoted and caring husband, father, and grandfather. All lucky enough to have spent time with him are better people from the experience.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his son John, and his sister Ann.
Bob is survived by his wife, Jeanne Cross; sons Richard (and his wife, Jenny) and Robert (and his wife, Deb); and grandchildren, Celia, Charlie, Connor, and Rachel.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2021, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Teague Funeral Service in Charlottesville. Family and friends will be invited to share stories starting at 3:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Virginia Athletics Foundation, P.O. Box 400833, Charlottesville, VA 22904.
