I had hoped to come to honor June's memory today, but I am not going to be able to do so. I worked with June when I was chair of the English Department and came to like and admire her greatly. Doing her job--it wasn't an easy one--was the least of it; she had energy, passion, heart, and a wicked sense of humor, and everything worked better and was better with her in the next office. She didn't suffer fools gladly, but somehow I passed the text. When I retired, she gave me a wooden toy train set with a steam engine named Gordon; it's sitting on my kitchen table right now, and I remember her every time I look at it. The English Department was lucky to have her, and I was lucky to have her. I can still hear her laugh.

I met June in Spring of 2001 the first time our paths crossed. She was coming to the Department of English, and I was leaving the department for a position elsewhere within the university. She was very friendly to me and even then, had a big hearty laugh that made me laugh with her. 
Years later when my mother was dying of cancer in 2008, she showed me great kindness, compassion and encouraged me to apply for a newly vacant position in English so I could care for my mother without taking a leave of absence. I would never have returned to English if it hadn’t been for June’s encouragement and support, and I am forever grateful.
May her family and loved ones in this time of sorrow now receive the same kindness, compassion, and support that June often gave to so many of us, including our students.

I am very sorry to hear of this loss. And I am attaching as best I can my condolences and memories of her. I would attend her memorial but am away from Charlottesville and caring for a family member; I am sad to miss it. 

June was a great support to me when I was the most junior faculty member in the department, showing me the way as a new employee and helping me navigate UVa's complicated and opaque systems of reimbursement. She was canny, gruff, wonderful, and warm -- a very special person.

June was a wonderful colleague. She treated all of us in the English Department as family too, and made Bryan Hall a much warmer place to work.

I'm a faculty member in the UVA English Department and worked closely with June during my stint as Director of Graduate Studies. On the one hand, June was a stickler for the rules--kept us all in line when faculty were careless about some procedural fine point. On the other hand, whenever a graduate student was in distress--when medical or other issues threatened to derail them--June was always as  flexible, creative, and compassionate as possible, juggling their funding or doing whatever was necessary to support them. It was an honor to collaborate with and be guided by her when such situations arose. As a professional, she combined great competence with great caring. My heartfelt condolences to her family, whom she loved so dearly.

June was my dearest friend for many years . She moved away over 30 years ago but I have never forgotten her. She will always hold a special place in my heart. I love her so much. You could always depend on her through the good and the bad. I will miss you but will see you again one day in heaven.  May God be with her family.  Rest in peace my dear and special friend.
