Catherine D. Weixel (Kay), 96, passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 15, 2017 and is united with the Lord. She was born January 29, 1921 in Shanghai, China where she was raised by her parents, Calistro and Henrietta Digmanese, and schooled by French nuns; learning Chinese, French and English. She and her oldest daughter, Cathie, survived WWII under dire conditions in Shanghai with the support of her dear friend, Zina Roth. After her first husband died, she met an Air Force pilot, LT William Weixel and they married in Bangkok, Thailand in 1950. She accompanied her “Bill” to various military assignments including Tucson, AZ, Naples and Florence, Italy and lastly, Plattsburgh, NY. In Plattsburgh, she and her husband adopted three children, Mark, Donna and Bruce. She lived in Plattsburgh, NY for 50 years prior to moving to Charlottesville. Kay was an avid quilter and won many blue ribbons for her beautiful quilts at the county fair. She enjoyed meeting with her friends at her Quilters guild, and teaching others how to quilt. She was very creative and also loved to sketch, paint and make jewelry. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, William C. Weixel, and two sons, Mark and Bruce Weixel. She is survived by two daughters, Catherine Wasserman and her husband Richard Wasserman, and Donna Moore and her husband David Moore, six grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Her family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Rosewood Village (Greenbrier) and Hospice of the Piedmont who provided her with loving and compassionate care in the last stage of her life. We salute you all. A memorial Mass will be held Friday, August 25, 2017 at the Church of the Incarnation, 1465 Incarnation Drive, Charlottesville, VA. Interment will be with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Hospice of the Piedmont.
