Mrs. Ann Clopton Stone Nelson of Charlottesville, VA passed away peacefully in her sleep early on the morning of June 12, 2024. She was born on April 16, 1930 in Richmond, VA, the daughter of Mildred Collins Pulliam and Robert Monroe Stone. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, Ann attended the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg and the Pan American Secretarial School in Richmond.
Ann was married for over 50 years to Hugh Nelson of Crozet, and had three children. She ran the Transportation Department at the American Red Cross in Montclair, NJ and later served on their Board of Directors. Avid bridge players, she and Hugh engaged in various local clubs and were active at Union Congregational Church.
After they retired to Charlottesville, Ann volunteered for the American Red Cross and served on the Board of Directors. Ann loved working at The Eternal Attic, nicknamed by Hugh “Ann’s Attic.” She also volunteered at the American Cancer Society, Martha Jefferson Hospital and Twice Is Nice. A few years after Hugh’s passing in 2015, Ann moved to Our Lady of Peace and was lovingly cared for by her daughters and the supportive community and staff at OLOP.
She is survived by her daughters Margaret Elizabeth Nelson of Randolph, NJ and Patricia Ann Nelson (Johan Westberg) of Washington, DC. She was predeceased by her husband Thomas Hugh Nelson, her daughter Katherine Lee Nelson, and her brother Robert Monroe Stone, Jr.
A Graveside Service for Ann will take place on Friday October 18, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Monticello Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made in Ann’s name to the Miller School or a charity of your choice.
