Alba Vittoria Shank, long-time resident of Charlottesville and retired teacher from Charlottesville City Schools, Passed away on June 3, 2022 at 5:45 PM at Sentara Jefferson Hospital from a sudden illness.
Alba was a naturalized American Citizen from Asmara, Eritrea, a former Italian colony located on the east coast of Africa. She was retired from the Charlottesville City Schools system with 35 years’ service as a Spanish teacher and an additional 21 years’ as an adjunct Associate Professor of Spanish at Piedmont Virginia Community College.
Alba was a doctoral graduate on Spanish from the University of Studies in Naples, Italy and an additional doctoral graduate on French language and literature from the University of California (Irvine) and the University of Iowa. She was also named “Fellow” of the University of California graduate school system and was noted for her fluency in Spanish, French, Italian, and Latin. Alba was certified to instruct all of these languages from the State of Virginia in grades K-12.
Alba was one of the original faculty hired in the fall of 1974 for the opening of the then new Charlottesville High School. She enjoyed many productive years of tenure as several of her students were admitted to the prestigious and well-known “Ivy Universities” of the American educational system.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Teague Funeral Home, with a viewing scheduled for 6-9 PM on June 9th, 2022, and the service at 2PM on June 10th, 2022, at Teague Funeral Service.
Alba is survived by her husband, Albert, and three children. Alba’s surviving children are Albert III (Tracy), Alba Maria (Curtis), and Paul (Nina). Alba additionally leaves six Grand-Children to remember her.
A memorial service in Alba’s memory is planned for the near-future through Alba’s church, St. Thomas Aquinas of the University of Virginia
