Growing up he attended Columbus High school in Columbus, Georgia. In college, he played football for Coach Bobby Dodd at Georgia Tech and loved being a part of that extended family for the rest of his life. He served in the US Army and flew helicopters in Vietnam, earning a Purple Heart and Air Medal. He continued his service in the Air National Guard and Army Reserves until his retirement.
As a salesman in the commercial property and casualty insurance industry, then later in the long term care industry, he loved to travel, to meet with clients and to hear their stories. Bill was considered a good listener and, all the way, possessed an indomitable wry sense of humor. Golf was one of his passions; he loved the challenge that each round presented. Until the end, he was practicing his putting stroke preparing for his next game.
Bill is survived by his wife and high school sweetheart, Liddy Hawkins Wilson; sons, Bill Wilson and wife Catherine of Atlanta, Georgia, and Sam Wilson and wife Marisa Munn Wilson of Black Mountain, North Carolina; sisters, Anne McCauley ([husband] Jerry McCauley) of Canon, Georgia, and Betty Plagens of Eastanolle, Georgia. Grandchildren are Will and Clayton Wilson of Atlanta, Georgia. He is further survived by sister- and brother-in-law Peggy and Jack Collins of Columbus, GA and a large and loyal group of nieces and nephews, cousins, and very good friends. He is preceded in death by his older brother Jack Wilson ([wife] Carolyn) of Tampa, FL, and brother-in-law William Hawkins of Atlanta, GA.
A visitation with military honors will be held from 1 to 2:30 PM on Saturday March 17, 2018 at McEwen Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210, with a reception following.
