Born October 4, 1932 in Hallsboro, NC, he was a son of the late Allison Almon White and Jewell Inman White. Following graduation from Tabor City High School, where he was nicknamed “Spider” by Charlie “Choo-Choo” Justice because of his antics on the basketball court, Bill studied business at Wake Forest University. After serving in the Army for two years, he went on to earn an MBA at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Bill’s career began at Price Waterhouse as a CPA in Atlanta and continued in Charlotte, where he helped open the first Price Waterhouse office there, with his specialty in the area of tax accounting. This time in Charlotte was followed by later moves to New York, and he eventually became a partner in the firm. Bill and his family moved to Charlotte for good in 1976, and around 1980 he founded Tradestreet Research to market financial analysis software using one of the world’s first portable computers. He also programmed a groundbreaking computer baseball game on this computer that his boys played for hours on end – “Open the window Aunt Minnie, that ball is outta here!!”
Bill was a long time faithful member of Sharon United Methodist Church in Charlotte and served in many capacities over the year. He was named also its honorary Coffee Czar, a role he cherished deeply and dutifully fulfilled for many years providing a varied spread of Sunday morning coffee. An avid bridge player, Bill played frequently with church members and other friends, and he enjoyed the fellowship as well as regularly bringing home the golden goose, which was given to the week’s champion. Another favorite pastime was biweekly games of pool with friends at Sharon Towers. He enjoyed watching Atlanta Braves baseball, Carolina Panthers football, Wake Forest basketball, and Jeopardy. Bill, an avid reader, loved reading historical non-fiction and delighted in sharing his books with friends and family. He also wrote several novels in a unique “almost rhyming” couplet style.
The joy of Bill’s life was his family. He adored his wife, Marietta Chamblee White, with whom he had recently celebrated 54 years of marriage. He was also a devoted father and grandfather who attended school and sports activities, cheering loudly at every event, and received many “Father of the Year” awards given out by his sons. He always looked forward to the annual family beach trip.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marietta Chamblee White; three children, Alan White (Stephanie) of Apex, David White (Lisa) of Charlotte, and Jon White (Jan) of Apex; five beloved grandchildren, Marisa, Deacon, Derek, Felix, and Andrew; his dear brother, Robert A. White (Cile) of Raleigh; as well as his loving sister, Janelle Gore of Gause Landing, NC along with a host of cherished nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service to celebrate Bill’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 29, at Sharon United Methodist Church and the family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, friends who wish to do so may make contributions to Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region; Sharon United Methodist Church; or to a charity of their choice.
