He was born on April 6, 1917 in the Newell community in Mecklenburg County which is now a part of Charlotte. He was a 1940 graduate of Elon College with a major in history and a minor in accounting. He served in World War II in the army as a staff sergeant at Fort Bragg and in 1944 went overseas to serve in New Guinea, the Philippines including the Battle of Luzon and finally to mainland Japan. He worked as an accountant for the Mecklenburg county schools, Charlotte Memorial Hospital, several construction firms finishing his career at F. N. Thompson as Vice President and Treasurer of the company in 1984 when he retired. He loved hunting, gardening, and watching major league baseball on TV.
Bill was preceded in death by his late wife Martha Massey Stewart, his parents William Means Stewart Sr. and Mary Lena Taylor Stewart, brothers Ben Stewart, James Stewart, Hope Stewart and Mark Stewart, his twin sister Mary Lena Stewart Stafford and his sisters Ann Stewart Stilwell and Nancy Jane Stewart.
Bill is survived by his two sons William (Bill) Stewart and his wife Kathy Stewart of Cary, NC and Dean Stewart and his wife Kelli Stewart of Trinity, NC. Five grandchildren Samuel Stewart and Sarah Stewart both of Trinity, NC, and Shawn Brooks and Dawn Porter each live in Burlington, NC and Shannon Clayton of Elon, NC and also many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Bill’s life will be held on Saturday July 23, 2022 at 1:30 pm at the Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church sanctuary on Mallard Creek Church Road in Charlotte, NC. Please feel free to wear business casual to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the Bill Stewart Football Scholarship or the William M. Stewart ’40 and Martha Massey Stewart endowment scholarship for Elon University.
