Mr. William Braxton Goodwin, 87, of Charlotte, entered into rest on Sunday, July 19, 2015 at the Harris Hospice Unit of Novant Presbyterian Hospital. A native of Red Bank, South Carolina, he was the only child of the late George Cromer and Sue Inez Addy Goodwin. Mr. Goodwin was a graduate of Lexington High School in Lexington, South Carolina. A member of the “Greatest Generation,” he served his country faithfully in the United States Army as a Draftsman. Upon his return, he continued his education at the University of South Carolina from which he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering, graduating in 1950. While there, he met the love of his life—his wife, Martha Evelyn McGee Goodwin. They were married on January 16, 1954 and shared their lives together for 61-1/2 years. They were blessed with three children, son Mark Goodwin of Monroe, NC, daughter Carole Goodwin of Charlotte, NC, and son Scott Goodwin and his wife Ruth, of Raleigh, NC. He was also blessed by his grandchildren, Paige Goodwin and his namesake, Alexander Braxton Goodwin. Mr. Goodwin was a member of Christ Lutheran Church. He loved airplanes and learning how to fly. In addition to his love of aviation, he was an avid photographer and a wonderful musician and played over 9 different instruments. Mr. Godwin was a chemical engineer and worked for Abbeville Mills in Abbeville, SC and Collins and Aikman in Albemarle, NC. He retired from Honeywell after 22 years of service but continued work after retirement with A.C. Controls in Mint Hill, NC. He also worked for WestVaCo.
A funeral service celebrating the life of William Braxton Goodwin will be held in the Charlotte Chapel of McEwen Funeral Service on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at 11:00 AM. Military rites will follow the service. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Interment will be private.
