Bill, who is now gathered to his people, was born on May 12th, 1932 in Wagram, NC. He was the only child of William C. and Anna McDonald Covington, both now deceased. He is survived by his wife Donna, with whom he enjoyed 64 years of marriage. He is also survived by two sons, Jeff Covington of Charlotte and Dr. Scott Covington (and his wife, Donna) of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. There were seven special grandchildren in Bill’s life: Grant, Cody, Lauren, Rachel, Davis, Anna and Ashlyn. “Wild Bill”, as they affectionately called him, particularly enjoyed watching them participate in various sports and other interests. Later in life, Bill and Donna added two furry special sons to the family—Jake and Charlie. He loved and treasured all his family, and indeed lived a full and abundant life.
After graduating from Wagram High School and receiving a BS degree from UNC Chapel Hill, Bill served as a navigator in the US Airforce Strategic Air Command, flying B-36 and B-52 bombers. After discharge, he returned to Chapel Hill for his MBA degree, and then joined North Carolina Nations Bank, the predecessor of Bank of America. He retired as an Executive Vice President in 1996 after 35 years.
Bill was very active in the Charlotte community, including serving on the Charlotte Douglas International Advisory board, The Coliseum/Convention Authority, the Charlotte Sports Commission, and several other organizations. He was a member of the Charlotte Country Club and enjoyed the fellowship of many fine men in his regular golf group.
A funeral service will be held at Myers Park Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, August 22nd at 2 pm. The family will receive friends following the service in the Oxford Hall. Burial will be private for the family in Wagram, NC. Memorials may be sent to the Autism Foundation of the Carolinas (2137, 220 N Tryon St., Charlotte, NC 28202) or to the Humane Society of Charlotte (2700 Toomy Ave., Charlotte, NC 28203).
In Wild Bill’s words…”It’s been a great ride, and to all my golf associates—may the wind always be at your back and an adult beverage nearby”.
