Bill was born to the late William H. Chafin and Ila Lawrence Chafin on November 21, 1944 in Wake County, NC.
Bill was raised in Charlotte, NC and graduated from Garinger High School in 1962. He attained his formal education from the University of North Carolina. Bill excelled in many careers during his life. He was the Director of National Accounts with Revlon from 1968-1982. From 1982-1984 he was President of Buch & Deichman United States, a ladies fashion accessory company based in New York. In 1984, Bill moved back to his hometown of Charlotte and purchased a chain of convenience stores in Western North Carolina.
In 1991, Bill began his career in real estate with Coldwell Banker Commercial. He was a member of The Charlotte Region Commercial Board of Realtors and a member of the national Coldwell Banker Commercial’s “The Platinum Circle of Distinction” which is the most prestigious honor an individual can receive and places him within the top five percent nationally. He consistently ranked in “The Top Ten Percent” in Commercial Sales and Leasing in the Charlotte Metro Area.
Bill enjoyed photography, his motorcycles, flowers, travel, the beach, the NC mountains, tradition, and the Christmas season. Most importantly, Papa loved his family. He was happiest when spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Bill is survived by his wife, Phyllis Mullis Chafin; daughter and son-in-law, Allison and BJ Hunsinger of Aberdeen, NC; son and daughter-in-law, Devin and Amy Chafin of Waxhaw, NC; grandchildren, Matthew and Zachary Hunsinger and Madison Rose Chafin and William Harrison Chafin III; his sister Gennie Aycoth and her family of Mint Hill, NC; brother-in-law, Roy Mullis and his wife Denise of Boone, NC; and his beloved step-father, Travis Tilley, of Graham, NC.
A service to celebrate Bill’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 12th in Harry & Bryant’s “Chapel in the Oaks” 500 Providence Road in Charlotte. His family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. and also following the service.
In lieu of flowers, and in remembrance of Bill, the family respectfully requests that memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
