Born January 20, 1935 in Charlotte to W. Frank Brownlee and Grace Rutledge Brownlee, Harry grew up in Charlotte and attended Alexander Graham Junior High School and Central High School. He graduated from Davidson College in 1956 and Columbia University Medical School in New York in 1960, interning at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York, after which he served as a Captain in the United States Army Medical Corps, and finished his residency at Roosevelt Hospital in New York, where he became Director of Outpatient Psychiatry. Dr. Brownlee was a pioneer in developing the model for employee assistance programs and was co-founder of Brownlee Dolan Stein, one of the first EAP firms in the United States and considered the standard for the industry.
Harry is survived by Marvin Koenig, his husband of twenty-three years; his sisters, Sarah Brownlee Bryant and Frances Brownlee Gribble Parker, both of Charlotte; his nieces and nephews, James R. Bryant III and Frank L. Bryant, both of Charlotte, Ann Gribble Glover of Palo Alto, California, Karen Brownlee Ham of Greenville, North Carolina, Dr. Richard Brownlee of Savannah, Georgia, Frank Earl Brownlee of Kinston, North Carolina and their families. He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Earl Brownlee.
