2015. A native of Carthage, he was preceded in death by his parents, the late Walter E. Porter, Sr.
and Molly Wallace Porter and sister Elizabeth (Libby) Zillman.
Born June 29, 1926, “Walt” was educated in Moore County Schools. He graduated from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill earning an AB degree in Chemistry. The recipient of
an MIT Westinghouse Fellowship, he earned an MA degree in guidance and counseling from
Appalachian University. Walt was retired from Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and Duke Power.
A gifted teacher and listener, Walt enjoyed a contagious love of people. He was beloved by former
students, colleagues, and friends. He exhibited a deep appreciation for the cultural enrichment of the
community and was a member of the American Guild of Organists.
He is survived by companion Frank C. Bradley; Mr. & Mrs. Frank K. Borden; Mr. & Mrs. F.
Kennon Borden, Jr.; Mr.& Mrs. James H. Borden; Mr. & Mrs. Michael W. Borden; Mr. & Mrs.
Drew Vermillion; Rev. & Mrs. Samuel R. Hope; Mr. & Mrs. O. D. Wallace.
A Memorial Service in witness to the resurrection will be held Monday, November 2, 11:00 a.m.,
In the Paul Helton Chapel at Forest Lawn West (4601 Freedom Drive, Charlotte). The family will
welcome friends at a reception immediately following. A Service of Committal will be held Tuesday,
November 3, Noon, at Cross Hill Cemetery in Carthage. Rev. Ronnie W. Parker will officiate
the services.
