Mrs. Winget, 94, of Charlotte, NC, died peacefully at Sharon Towers on Friday, February 3, 2012. She was born October 15, 1917 in Bowling Green (York Co., SC) the daughter of Frank McAllister Jackson and Belle Campbell Jackson. She is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Sam Allen Winget.
Virginia graduated from Clover High School in 1935, and earned her BA in History at Winthrop University in 1939; and her Masters Degree in History in 1950. She taught Social Studies in Heath Springs, Iva, and Rock Hill, before she married Sam Winget on June 24, 1950. She became a devoted mother to their two sons, Thomas McAllister Winget (deceased) and William Allen Winget.
She returned to teach at Fort Mill High School for six years before moving to South Mecklenburg High when it opened in 1959. She retired in 1973.
In retirement, she became a devoted grandmother to her three grandchildren, greeting them each afternoon after school, and treasuring her time with her family, who all lived together on their family farm.
Virginia was a member of Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and was an active member of the "Women of the Church." She was an elder, and chaired the Building Committee in the 1970's. Ever the teacher, she volunteered at Alexander Children's Center for many years.
In her final years, she was faithfully attended by her caretaker and companion, Leopoldine Onganda, as well as the wonderful staff at the Health Care Center of Sharon Towers.
She is survived by her son, William Allen Winget, his wife Susan; grandchildren, Mac Winget, his wife Megan and their daughter, Mary, Erin Winget Hoyer and her husband Jacob, and Sam Winget.
A memorial service to celebrate Virginia's life well lived will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, February 6, 2012 at Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church, 15000 York Rd., Charlotte, with the Reverend Bob Jack officiating. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service.
