Born September 1, 1944 in Mobile, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Maggie Lee Hewett and Eugene Hewett. After graduating from Brookwood High School in Alabama, Virginia attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa where she received a bachelor's degree in education. Virginia married Roger Tooker from Chicago, Illinois on January 15, 1972. She began her career teaching social studies and geography to middle school students in Huntsville, Alabama. Virginia was then a longtime teacher for Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools, showing adolescents an appreciation for the world around them and honing their critical thinking skills. Prior to her retirement she taught at Northwest School of the Arts where Virginia guided students in using their creative side while meeting required class objectives.
Virginia will be missed by her friends who admired her kindness, humor and spirit of adventure. Her smile and infectious laugh will be remembered by all who have ever met her. Her interests included world travel, contemporary jazz, birding, four-legged pets, camping, astronomy, cooking and fine dining. “VA” became excited and loved colors in nature be it predawn sky colors reflected in a lake, a farmer’s field of cotton prior to harvest or simply a single wild flower blooming near a highway pull-off; she enjoyed those moments immensely.
Virginia is survived by her husband Roger, sister Helen Lenz, and sister-in-law Donna Gotsch.
